The Farmer's Letters to the People of England Containing the Sentiments of a Practical Husbandry, on various subjects of the Utmost Importance. To Which is added Sylvae or Occasional Tracts of Husbandry and Rural Oeconomics. Printed for W. Nicoll at the Paper Mill in St Paul's Churchyard. 1767 so true first edition. Many editions followed of this forthright work by the foremost commentator on agriculture of the 18th Century. Externally fully calf binding which is probably original or near contemporary, gilt-stamped and 5 raised bands and red gilt titled label to spine A little loss to base of spine but otherwise in very good order. 8.5"x5" Internally very clean with only contemporary inscription to ffep and a few now clean worm holes to first few pages. Otherwise a nice, clean and tight and complete text. vii preliminaries pp 323. Young was the pre-eminent commentator on agriculture of his day and extolled the virtues of land improvement and enclosure. More of an academic than a practitioner, he lost money on 3 farms and his obsession with farming led his wife to suffer a nervous breakdown and an early death. His eulogy at her funeral consisted of a lecture on the benefits of land improvement! This seems to be an original copy of the first edition and is in very good condition bar a few minor flaws. …

FIRST EDITION 1775, 2 volumes, COMPLETE SET. 8vo, approximately 210 x 125 mm, 8 x 5 inches, pages: Volume 1, [4], 1-472; Volume 2, [4], 1-319, [16] - index, both half-titles present, modern reback in lighter leather keeping the original speckled calf boards, gilt lettered labels, gilt rules and gilt volume numbers to spine, engraved armorial bookplate of Lord Walsingham to pastedown of each volume. Original boards darkened and slightly scuffed, corners worn, tip of one corner missing, the others with slight loss of leather and board showing at tips, occasional small spot or mark, pale staining to edges of pastedowns, otherwise a very good tight set. This work written on the eve of the Revolution, suggests that the ready availability of land would keep colonists happy and loyal to Great Britain. The colonies of North America and the British West Indies are treated individually at length. Authorship not definitely established, Sabin list it under the name of Arthur Young.
