Paper. Zustand: Good. First Edition. A Large Collection of Typed and Hand Written Correspondence between Anthony Rossiter and His Publisher with Regards to his Book 'The Pendulum.' Most of the Literature is with regards to the sending of Complimentary Copies from Rossiter to His Friends Including W H Auden, Groucho Marx, Robert Lowell, Saul Bellow, John Updike, James Dickey, John Steinbeck. Also includes a copywrite contract and other publishing matters and addresses of his literate friends. Mainly dated 1969. Anthony Rossiter RWA MSIAD was a British landscape painter who was educated at Eton and studied painting at Chelsea Art School from 1947-51. He was a romantic visionary, a "poet" whose heaven was the Mendip Hills in Somerset. Gnarled hedgerows, tumbling stone walls, broken gates, reflections in water and ploughed fields were all his subject matter. His works also included portraits, most notably that of W.H. Auden. Anthony Rossiter began his correspondence with Huxley and Osmond while writing his autobiography, The Pendulum (Gollancz, 1966). From the ecstasy of the creative high to the agonising despair of depression, The Pendulum was the creative artist's riposte to the cult success of Doors of Perception (Chatto & Windus, 1954). Where Huxley induced heightened perception by carefully controlled experiments with mescaline, Rossiter's swings came naturally and without warning. Elizabeth Jennings CBE (18 July 1926 26 October 2001) was an English poet. Jennings' early poetry was published in journals such as Oxford Poetry, New English Weekly, The Spectator, Outposts and Poetry Review, but her first book was not published until she was 27. The lyrical poets she cited as having influenced her were Hopkins, Auden, Graves and Muir. Her second book, A Way of Looking, won the Somerset Maugham award and marked a turning point, as the prize money allowed her to spend nearly three months in Rome, which was a revelation. Hand-set in 12-point Bell and printed in black, the title in green, on Zerkall white laid mould-made paper. Quarter-bound by Scola Press in green buckram with cream spine label and Whittington marbled paper-covered boards. Copy 17 of 150 copies signed by both the author and artist on the limitation page. An elegant early collaboration between the Celandine Press and the Whittington Press, and the first Celandine Press title to be printed by Whittington. The restrained typography and careful presswork are complemented by the softly atmospheric drawings of Anthony Rossiter, reproduced as tipped-in plates. Together they provide a quiet visual accompaniment to the reflective and lyrical poems. Elizabeth Jennings (1926-2001) was one of the leading British poets of the postwar period and a prominent member of "The Movement," alongside writers such as Philip Larkin and Kingsley Amis. Her poetry is noted for its clarity, emotional restraint, religious themes, and close observation, qualities that made her one of the most widely admired and accessible English poets of her generation.
