Hardback. Zustand: Good. An introspective boy and an adventurous girl uncover a poignant family mystery during a summer on the shores of Three Bird Lake. For as long as he can remember, Adam and his parents have spent their summers at his grandmother's rustic cabin on Three Bird Lake. But this year will be different. There will be no rowdy cousins running around tormenting Adam. There will be no Uncle John or Aunt Jean. And there'll be no Dad to fight with Mom. This year, the lake will belong just to Adam. But then Adam meets Alice, the girl next door, who seems to want to become friends. Alice looks just like the aloof, popular girls back home--what could he and she possibly have in common?Turns out, Alice isn't like the girls back home. She's frank, funny, and eager for adventure. And when Adam's grandma starts to leave strange notes in his room--notes that hint at a hidden treasure somewhere at the lake and a love from long ago--Alice is the one person he can rely on to help solve the mysteries of Three Bird Lake.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Antoine van Agtmael coined the term "emerging markets" and built a career and a multibillion-dollar investing firm centered on these surging economies that would, over time, supplant the West as engines of wealth and prosperity. The trend held for decades, but a few years ago van Agtmael and Alfred Bakker, a renowned European journalist, began seeing signs that the tide might be turning. For example, during a visit to an enormously successful chip company in Taiwan, the company's leaders told them that their American competitors were now eating their lunch. And Taiwan was not the only place giving them this message. Thus began a remarkable two-year journey to reassess the conventional wisdom that the United States and Europe are yesterday's story and to determine whether there something profound is happening that points the way to the creation of the next economy. In The Smartest Places on Earth, van Agtmael and Bakker present a truly hopeful and inspiring investigation into the emerging sources of a new era of competitiveness for America and Europe that are coming from unlikely places--those cities and areas once known as "rustbelts" that have, from an economic perspective, been written off. Take Akron, Ohio, whose economy for decades was dependent on industries such as tire manufacturing, a product now made cheaply elsewhere. In Akron and other such communities, a combination of forces--including visionary thinkers, government initiatives, start-ups making real products, and even big corporations--have succeeded in creating what van Agtmael and Bakker call a "brainbelt." These brainbelts depend on a collaborative work style that is unique to the societies and culture of America and Europe, since they involve levels of trust and freedom of thinking that can't be replicated elsewhere. They are producing products and technologies that are transforming industries such as vehicles and transportation, farming and food production, medical devices and health care. For several decades, American and European industry focused on cost by outsourcing production to those emerging markets that can make things cheaper. The tide has now turned toward being smart, as van Agtmael and Bakker report, and the next emerging market, may, in fact, be the West.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The purpose of this study is to establish the relationship between financial issues and millennials' partnered relationships satisfaction. Furthermore, in the analysis of this topic, there are three main financial issues being discussed. These financial issues are the following: financial management, financial problem, and financial distress. These were used as the determining factors in assessing the level of satisfaction for millennials' partnered relationships. The quantitative method was used in this study; by carefully selecting 385 participants whose ages range from 25-36 years old. Provided that they had stayed together for at least three years, these millennial participants were randomly picked from the United States of America (USA). In the course of this study, variables including their gender, educational level, and income, were the primary focus. The results revealed that 90% of the selected millennials' in partnered relationships, (who did not adopt the policy of financial management), ended up having financial problems which eventually led them into financial distress. From the results obtained, it was concluded that in order for the millennials (in partnered relationships) to have a successful financial satisfaction, they have to and ought to know how to manage their finances well. Managing one's finances efficiently would definitely help in reducing our financial problems, which in turn might reduce financial distress, and the couples can enjoy a high level of financial satisfaction with their relationships.…

Hardback. Zustand: Good. Brother Victor established a lasting place in the cookbook world with his From a Monastery Kitchen and 12 Months of Monastery Soups, which have sold 1.5 million and 2.5 million copies respectively worldwide. The Pure Joy of Monastery Cooking takes Brother Victor?s work a step further with his first fully illustrated cookbook. The meatless recipes collected here capture the essence of culinary and spiritual simplicity as lived at Our Lady of the Resurrection Monastery. And simplicity is here integrated with the virtues of frugality and prudence in a complete cookbook covering appetizers, soups, salads, entre´es, crepes, breads, sauces, and desserts. Brother Victor?s authentic message of simple elegance provides the perfect culinary approach for today?s world. The focus on local ingredients, home cooking, and fine dining is an antidote to the overhyped, overprocessed, and overproduced environment in which we live and eat. Brother Victor?s authenticity shines through in his writing and in the gorgeous photographs taken in the pastoral garden of the monastery where he developed these recipes. Every cook and kitchen will delight in these 200+ recipes?from Leeks Vinaigrette (notable in light of Brother Victor?s renowned vinegars), to an extensive collection of egg and omelet dishes; crepes and pancakes; vegetarian casseroles; pasta, rice, and couscous dishes; vegetable courses; and desserts.…

Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. ONE OF BARACK OBAMA'S FAVORITE BOOKS OF 2022 * An NPR and Time Best Book of the Year * Longlisted for the 2022 Scotiabank Giller Prize (Canada) * Finalist for CALIBA's 2022 Golden Poppy Awards A successful art dealer confesses the story of his meteoric rise in this "powerful, intoxicating, and shocking" (The New York Times) novel that's a "slow burn à la Patricia Highsmith" (Oprah Daily). "You'll struggle not to rip through in one sitting" (Vogue). In a first-class lounge at JFK airport, our narrator listens as Jeff Cook, a former classmate he only vaguely remembers, shares the uncanny story of his adult life--a life that changed course years before, the moment he resuscitated a drowning man. Jeff reveals that after that traumatic, galvanizing morning on the beach, he was compelled to learn more about the man whose life he had saved, convinced that their fates were now entwined. But are we agents of our fate--or are we its pawns? Upon discovering that the man is renowned art dealer Francis Arsenault, Jeff begins to surreptitiously visit his Beverly Hills gallery. Although Francis does not seem to recognize him as the man who saved his life, he nevertheless casts his legendary eye on Jeff and sees something worthy. He takes the younger man under his wing, initiating him into his world, where knowledge, taste, and access are currency; a world where value is constantly shifting and calling into question what is real, and what matters. The paths of the two men come together and diverge in dizzying ways until the novel's staggering ending. Sly, suspenseful, and "gloriously addicting" (BuzzFeed), Mouth to Mouth masterfully blurs the line between opportunity and exploitation, self-respect and self-delusion, fact and fiction--exposing the myriad ways we deceive each other, and ourselves.…
