Eine Rolle spielt in diesem ersten Stadium namentlich das Tanzlied, worin sich die Künste gleichsam noch ungetrennt im Keime bei einander finden, um sich erst bei höherer Entwickelung als Poesie, Musik und Mimik zu scheiden, ganz ähnlich wie es ja auch für die bildenden Künste, Architektur, Skulptur und Malerei zutrifft. -- Was wir nun aber über die Beschaffenheit der Musik aller Völker des vorklassischen Altertums wissen, beruht meist auf späteren Nachrichten griechischer Schriftsteller und auf Vermutungen, die man auf Grund von Reiseberichten über die jetzige Musik dieser Völker auf den Zustand derselben im Altertum macht.
