This reminiscence, though lacking in grandhistorical facts, quite simply gives the best description of atypical day on the Oregon Trail. A review of the Northwestpublishers who have reprinted this attests to its enduringinterest: Oregon Historical Quarterly (1900), the CaxtonClub edition of 1934 which includes Jesse A. It meant surviving torrential rains, an occasional tornado, blistering heat, blinding dust and sand, swarms of insects, stampeding buffalo, a variety of diseases including scurvy and the dreaded cholera, days without water, fresh food, and forage, and the possibility of attacks by hostile Indians.
