Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. First Edition. 1st printing. A FINE, bright, clean, tight copy sans tears, stains, markings, and discoloration. "Regarded as anonymously written fiction when it was originally published in 1864, this rollicking story of the way it was in the Union's Army of the Po…tomac, is a thinly disguised tale of truth. It is, in fact, a scathing attack on the character and military ability of Gen. Andrew Atkinson Humphreys. The author, Lt. Col. William H. Armstrong of the 129th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, risked a libel action to send his message, yet he recognized that abuses within the system could not be addressed without first being exposed." 378 pages. "Frederick B. Arner's perceptive and comprehensive commentary identifies the main players and units and taps primary sources that support Armstorng's point of view." GB22.

In den WarenkorbSigned by the Author. Octavo, navy blue cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, xx, 207 pp. Fine in Fine, mylar protected dust jacket. From dust jacket: The Mutiny at Brandy Station presents in microcosm the character and actions of men who served in the United States Army of the Potomac in 1864, when some of the veteran regiments were… transferred from units they had served with pride and placed under commanders whose competence and bravery they questioned. This story honors some officers of truly heroic proportion who believed in their own invulnerability to such a degree as to be detrimental to their physical well-being, and reveals the petty, vindictive posturing and in-fighting of promotion politics among some others. It presents veteran enlistees who served with honor for three long years, sweated out their final days as honorably as possible, and wrestled with the question of re-enlisting under new officers. The setting is Brandy Station, Virginia, ten months after the greatest cavalry battle of the war had played out across its fields and now headquarters for Maj. George Meade's Army of the Potomac. Civil War, War between the States, American History, U. S. History, Military History, Americana, U.S.-iana. aslic.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. xx, 207, [5] pages. Illustrations. Map. Appendices. Notes. A Commentary on the Cited Sources. Index. The dust jacket has some wear, soiling and an edge tear at back. The Mutiny at Brandy Station presents, in microcosm, the c…haracter and actions of men who served the United States Army of the Potomac in 1864. The story follows key players through the reorganization, the courts martial, and into the Wilderness using quotes from their diaries, memoirs, and reports as well as original trial transcripts. Foreword by Clark B. Hall. Fred Arner was educated at the George Washington Law School and the Harvard Law School. He served as a tail gunner in a B-29 during World War II and as a chief gunner on a B-36 in the Strategic Air Command during the Korean War. He worked for the Congressional Research Service and as a Congressional Committee staff member for more than thirty years and is the author of a book and several articles on these subjects. The setting is Brandy Station, Virginia, ten months after the greatest cavalry battle of the war had played out across its fields and now headquarters for Maj. Gen. George Meade's Army of the Potomac. Gen. Meade reorganized the army in March 1864 and in the shuffle broke up the venerable Hooker Brigade, in existence since late summer of 1861. In an effort to keep the brigade together for a few more months, until the three-year enlistments of its veterans would expire, the junior officers protested the order. Five of the so-called ring leaders were charged with mutiny and other offenses and court martialed. Four of the five were from the 11th Massachusetts, a unit that wore the white diamond insignia of the Hooker Brigade with unbounding pride and honor. The story follows the key players through the reorganization, the courts martial, and into the Wilderness.
