NOTE: this is not a translation of the Rig Veda but a study of it. ~"This great collection of the Thousand and One Hymns belongs in language and, in the main, in substance to the western (or European) world, and is by far its oldest literary monument; but it was composed and has been preserved to us by the priestly caste of the Brahmans upon the soil of Asia, and has therefore been specially exposed to contact with Eastern habits of thought. The date of the poems may be determined, though only within very wide limits, by the following considerations. They contain references to a system of astronomy which cannot have been constructed before the year 2800 B.C. Their language is later than the parting of the Aryans of Asia from their parent stock, and again later than the division of this Asiatic group into a western or Iranian, and an eastern or Indian branch. There are no clear geographical references which indicate that any of the hymns were composed before the latter crossed the mountain barrier of the Hindu Kush, and settled in the valley of the Indus".
