Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book is an archival collection of a high school class's newspaper, containing excerpts from 1903-1904, an era of educational transition. The high school is situated in Ann Arbor, Michigan (a major college town) whose residents are strongly influenced by the surrounding university. Many entries grapple with the impact of proximity to higher education and expectations both within and outside the schoolhouse. The graduating class of 1904 includes several remarkable students whose achievements are celebrated in the newspaper excerpts. The debate over how to improve high school education, and what the goals should be for that education (practical or academic) is well-documented. This volume offers an important view into the evolving ideas of the progressive era and is a valuable resource for educational historians. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

This volume contains some of the gems of literature which the race has learned to love. Some of the 'old fashioned selections' and some of the most charming new short classics, are offered as a basis for study and appreciation. The average pupil will study his reading lesson with zest if he is given some definite work to do. In these studies, the brief introduction to each selection is intended to whet the pupil's appetite. The exercises following each study make his study definite and to the point. Helpful notes are added wherever necessary, and additional readings are given. ; Selections include: The American Boy -- The Light That Is Felt -- The Tiger The Brahman, And The Jackal -- A Kind Word -- Little Brown Hands -- The Lame Man And The Blind Man -- The Owl And The Pussy-cat -- September -- The Arab And His Camel -- The Shepherd Boy And The Wolf -- Needless Pain -- Because He Loves Us -- Marjorie's Almanac -- The Brown Thrush -- Truth -- God Bless Our Flag -- The Quails -- The Discontented Stonecutter -- The Cloud -- All Things Beautiful -- Labor -- The Matsuyama Mirror -- Work While You Work -- The Pen -- The Quest -- God Bless The Commonplace -- A Bright Chinese Boy -- The Grapevine Swing -- Beautiful Joe -- Forget-me-not -- October's Bright Blue Weather -- Daisies -- So Much Of Goodness -- The Breaking In Of Black Beauty -- The Children's Hour -- The Magic Mill -- The Corn Song -- Daniel Webster's First Case -- The Day Is Done -- The Image And The Treasure -- Somebody's Mother -- Look For Goodness -- The Code Barbarian -- The Discontented Pendulum -- True Success -- Which Loved Best? -- Hope -- The Story Of King Midas -- T Is The Last Rose Of Summer -- Home, Sweet Home -- The Fight -- A Simple Recipe -- The Angels Song -- A Visit From St, Nicholas -- Ring Out, Wild Bells! -- Beauty In Common Things -- Letters Of Recommendation -- A Song For Flag Day -- The Stone In The Road -- Answer To A Child's Question -- Paul Revere's Ride -- The Dream Of Home -- The Choice Of Hercules -- Thomas Jefferson's Ten Rules -- After The Shipwreck -- The Lost Camel -- The Planting Of The Apple Tree -- We Should Smile -- The Humbug -- Sky-born Music -- The Pebble And The Acorn -- The Tree -- Service -- The Sleeping Beauty -- A Wholesome Tongue -- The Village Blacksmith -- Genuine Heroism -- The Legend Of Indian Corn -- Robert E. This reader, published after World War I, begins with a poem, "The American Boy." It is a dialogue between a father and son about patriotism. According to the author of this reader, the influence of the story "The Poor Little Match Girl" "founded many an orphan home and organized hundreds of societies for relief of the worthy poor," which indicates an emphasis on philanthropy and social work during the era of the Social Gospel.80% of selections taught traditional values."-- Sharon Vincz Andrews ; signature of a youthful Gerald Grout, later a Kansas Ophthalmologist ; GOOD. A FINE AND UNIQUE MANUSCRIPT, CRAFTED IN THE FASHION OF THE ARTS AND CRAFTS MOVEMENT AND SPECIALLY BOUND BY ONE OF THE GREATEST AMERICAN FEMALE BOOKBINDERS OF THE 20TH CENTURY FOR HER FRIENDS: THE CHRISTIAN SOCIALIST ACTIVIST GEORGE HERRON, A MINISTER, AND HIS YOUNG SPOUSE CARRIE RAND, THE HEIRESS OF A BANKING FAMILY, WHO EMBRACED THE SOCIALIST CAUSE. 8vo (233 x 154 mm); bound in full burgundy morocco decorated with gilt flames embossed to boards in a double gilt frame; signed «H. G. H.», short for Helen Gowen Haskell; within the double gilt frame are the gilt letters «H» and «R», the initial of the spouses surnames, Herron and Rand, both embossed in gilt circles; five raised bands to spine; gilt flames and gilt letters «H» and «R» in gilt circles embossed to spine; double gilt frame with gilt flames to the head and the foot of both front and rear pastedown; all edges gilt; endpapers blank; leaves measuring 228 x 148 mm, pages: [156]; manuscript in black ink with initials for each section in red ink; page-frames in red ink; two drawings in the text. Original autograph document. Signed by most contributors (also referred to as "Social Democratic comrades") in red-ink boxes in the text. Original manuscript by the well-known Liverpudlian socialist Leonard Abbott, a follower of William Morris; published in pamphlet form in the prestigious «International Socialist Review» in July 1901 (pp. 14-20), it was met with public outcry and caused a scandal, as illustrated by Rose L. Martin in her detailed account of the circumstances in which the wedding came about in «Fabian Freeway. High Road to Socialism in the U.S.A. 1884-1966». At the turn of the 19th century, an event shook American society like a powerful earthquake. In the aftermath of the scandalous event, outburst of rage and indignation stirred the country, especially in the most conservative and traditionalist circles. The clergyman, educator, author, and Social Gospel advocate George D. Herron, a married father-of-four, left his lawfully wedded wife Mary out of love for another woman, Carrie A. Rand. The following unconventional union between Herron and Rand took place on May 25, 1901, in a New York apartment under the appellation of socialist wedding. Carrie Rand was the daughter of a lumber baron and banker and Caroline Rand, who donated profusely to Socialists and those who believed in their cause, whose inheritance would later fund and found the Rand School of Social Science in 1906. George D. Herron (1862-1925) was at one time a Christian Socialist minister, a founder of the Rand School of Social Science, a member of the Socialist Party, and the author of books and pamphlets on social and religious issues. Pastor William Franklin Lemmons greatly disapproved of the wedding, as he later wrote in his book «The Evils of Socialism». The binder Helen "Nellie" Gowen Haskell Noyes (1864-1940) was an esteemed American binder, whose lifelong work earned her the Guild of Bookworkers «Lifetime Achievement Award» in 1937. A manuscript book, bound by a great American woman binder, which deals with socialism, universal social and civil rights, as well as the feminist cause. This book symbolises the American fight against the establishment, traditional social and legal norms, and the rule of capitalism. It was the wedding gift that the inner circle of socialist, progressive and anarchist friends ("comrades") of George D. Herron and Carrie Rand Herron crafted on the occasion of their scandalous so-called "socialist wedding," which had to set the standard for the bright future of international socialism that they hoped was nigh. The couple fled the US and took refuge in Italy after their performance of a socialist wedding provoked a storm of criticism and violent personal attacks directed at them.…
