India-Pakistan Cross-LoC Connectivity: Bridging the Gap between Ladakh and Baltistan by Invoking the Balti Culture/Zainab Akhter. Index. The present book makes an in-depth analysis of both historical as well as recent development in Gilgit-Baltistan-a territory illegally occupied by Pakistan. The politico-security establishment of Pakistan has, over the years, not only marginalised the indigenous people of Gilgit-Baltistan, but also been exploiting the precious natural resources with the help of outside powers having vested interested in the region. This has serious ramification on the stability and overall peace and security in the region.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: As New. 1st Edition. The volume brings together 20 research papers prepared mostly by scholars from North-East India, on the critical problems of tribal demography and development. In particular, emphasis has been put on nutrition, health and education. The wider issues involved in the development of tribal areas have also been discussed by several well known scholars on tribal population. Even though the focus of this volume is on North-east India, the special problems of different tribal communities within this region have also been brought out by several papers. In the ultimate analysis all the tribes cannot be clubbed together even in North-East India. Individual attention is required of each tribal community in the preparation of sub plans by the Planning Commission. (jacket).

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: New. The Hunger of the Republic: Our Present in Retrospect is the first of a series of volumes that turn back to India's recent history to produce a retrospective account of how our present got shaped. A return to the last three decades, and to the mutations caused by globalization to concepts such as democracy, welfare and justice, indeed the very idea of the people as citizen-subjects, produce a new staging ground for the apparently unprecedented nature of the contemporary moment. Key essays on politics, economics, cultural studies, and aesthetics appear alongside works of art, documentary film, photography, maps, letters and legal documents. India Since the 90s (general editor: Ashish Rajadhyaksha) is a series of six titles exploring recent history from the standpoint of the present moment. As we face new and unprecedented phenomena in the twenty-first century, along with the new, there is also a ghostly re-evocation of things we have seen and done that relentlessly suggest that we may have been here before. Familiar forms and arguments become curiously prescient revealing new relevance. This series includes texts and images from diverse academic disciplines, curated and assembled by practitioners looking back to reconsider our past.

Viewing marginality as a causal explanation of inequality, the social science academia has generated a vast body of literature and discourse on diverse juxtaposed issues such as justice, equality, empowerment, subalternity, multiculturalism and inclusion. This book is a critique as well as a systematic documentation of the experiences and debates of the contested marginality across South Asia in general, and Indian society in particular, across time-space continuum. It reflects the dialectics of social justice and multiple forms of marginalization. It also sets forth how marginality is contemporarily experienced across a variety of communities and groups like scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, peasants, women, physically challenged, minorities and culturally deprived sections and how they cumulate across the life course. Following an interdisciplinary approach, the work brings to the reader the lived experiences and narratives of enduring marginality and injustice. This book, besides providing insights into the contours of marginality embedded across contemporary South Asia, also provokes an engaging overview of advocacy for coherent justice. It will be appealing and apposite to academicians, practitioners and scholars interested in postcolonial and subaltern studies, inclusive policies and growth, social justice and social exclusion in South Asian perspective.(jacket).

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. The book is a systematic study of poverty in India. It brings together contributions of several social scientists with the objective of promoting clearer understanding of poverty-related questions through inter-disciplinary dialogues. The book deals with issues of poverty and society in India and discusses the challenges of studying the multidimensional aspects of poverty. Each section of the book contains a specific thematic area in the study of poverty, looking at the theoretical, methodological and empirical aspects of the dynamics of poverty in India. Some of the papers in this book have tried to evaluate poverty eradication policies and programmes since independence. It has also papers on the people's responses to their situations of poverty. Most of the papers in the book have used microdata for critical analysis of programmes and policies in different regions of India. A large proportion of India's poor are living in chronic poverty. This has resulted in protests, electoral defeats for ruling political parties and coalitions and the rise of extremism. If we analyse the protests/movements after the 1990s closely, we can see that these displayed some emerging characteristics. Firstly, these movements were against post-liberalisation industrialisations, which were based on privatisation of public resources and mostly profit-oriented. These were also based on capital-intensive technologies and maximum utilisation of the natural resources. The post-liberalisation industrialisation policy ignored the land, forest and water issues, which were basic sources of livelihood for rural populations of the country. The movements also tried to link the issues of development with cultural questions. Thirdly, these movements also tried to provide an alternative discourse of people-friendly development and they also provided a space for the marginalised masses. These protests and movements also questioned the political economy approach of development and gave an alternative to link development with the socio-cultural aspects of the specific region. Finally, all these protests/movements are against industrial developments which are creating marginalised groups in peripheral areas.

He wrote on anything that caught his attention, from dog-shows to cricket, local breeds of cattle to temple carvings, squirrels in his backyard to elephants, gaur and mouse deer of the forests. He did not just write occasionally, but wrote steadily and inspiringly for well over 35 years. A pioneer in the field of black and white photography, Krishnan's contribution to wildlife photography and writing on natural history in India has no parallel. In this special compilation, an effort has been made to select lively and anecdotal text for which Krishnan has been recognized, to accompany images that he created which are in a class of their own." In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. The Kashmir dispute dates from 1947. The partition of the Indian sub-continent along religious lines led to the formation of India and Pakistan. However, there remained the problem of over 650 states, run by princes, existing within the two newly independent countries. In theory, these princely states had the option of deciding which country to join, or of remaining independent. In practice, the restive population of each province proved decisive. The United Nations and its member states have brokered peace in Kashmir since the beginning, and going forward, they will be called on to do the same. The UN mission on the ground, as well as the diplomats around the world, must continue to walk the tight line of limiting violence and encouraging human rights, while respecting Indian and Pakistani sovereignty. The Kargil War, also known as the Kargil conflict, was an armed conflict between India and Pakistan that took place between May and July 1999 in the Kargil district of Kashmir and elsewhere along the Line of Control (LOC). The conflict is also referred to as Operation Vijay (Victory in Hindi) which was the name of the Indian operation to clear the Kargil sector. It is hoped that the book would be of great value to the researchers and students of defence studies and the common readers.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. India and China share a long history of peaceful coexistence that goes back to the third millennium. Trade relations flourished through the famous "Silk Route". The advent of Buddhism in China saw further cementing of religious and cultural ties between the two great nations. China and India's emergence as global powers is unprecedented in modern history. Sino-Indian bilateral relations are defined by a complex balance of competition and cooperation that Tellis characterized as co-engagement. China and India's expectations of becoming great powers are based on a sense that 'their civilisation greatness entitles them to great-power status', derived from their shared pre-colonial background as regional powers, at which time they displayed the will and capability to act as hegemons and dominate the economy and security of their respective regions. As the book addresses this crucial issue quite deftly, it is hoped that it would prove to be a source of great information for the reader.

They provide new insights into a turbulent era in modern India's cultural history. Although known primarily as a filmmaker, Kumar Shahani has taught, spoken and written on a variety of subjects over this period, that include the cinema, but also politics, aesthetics, history and psychoanalysis. In these essays Shahani addresses diverse political issues, aesthetic practice, questions of artistic freedom and censorship. There are also personal essays on filmmakers and artists including his teachers and colleagues. Shahani's often polemical positions, as they occur in several previously unpublished essays and presentations, are essential contributions to film and cultural histories of the Indian cinema as well as of the New Cinema worldwide. The book includes a comprehensive introductory essay, 'Kumar Shahani Now', by Ashish Rajadhyaksha.
