Dureza ancestral sí, pobreza también, pero también irreemplazable recuerdo de una libertad perdida, de una dignidad en el trabajo y en las relaciones familiares, de un contacto casi místico con las raíces. Alberto Asor Rosa nació en 1933 en Roma, donde enseña literatura italiana y dirige el departamento de Estudios Literarios y Lingüísticos de la universidad La Sapienza. En sus inicios se ocupó de los lugares comunes de la cultura literaria contemporánea. Posteriormente, se dedicó a la literatura medieval y renacentista para abarcar, con el tiempo, el estudio de toda la producción literaria italiana. Es autor de monografías sobre Boccaccio, Verga y Calvino, entre otros, así como de estudios sobre el canon de los clásicos italianos y de una Storia della letteratura italiana reeditada en varias ocasiones. De su obra cabe destacar además La guerra, un ensayo sobre las formas actuales de convivencia humana y sobre las estrategias internacionales del momento; Genus italicum, un ensayo acerca de la identidad literaria italiana desde Dante hasta Calvino; y de la novela sobre la relación entre los hombres y los animales que conviven con ellos, Historia de animales y otras vidas (Barataria, 2006).
