In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 'From The Latest London Edition. In Two Volumes.' I've rated these volumes Very Good, taking into consideration that they were published around 200 years ago. Had they been published 10 years ago the rating would be quite different. You can see the covers in the photos provided. They are pretty cle…an, a couple of spots. Volume 1 has a small bit of rub-through at the corners. The corners of volume 2 surprisingly have close to no wear. Both volumes have only minor wear at the edges. Volume 2 has a little bit of ruffled leather at the rear top edge, not reaching the level of rub-through. The gilt lettering on the spine has held up pretty well. Both volumes have slight loss at the top edge of the spine. The front cover of volume 1 has a thin semi-crack (though not at the gutter between the front inside cover and first front end paper). When you pull on this cover from the side, it has the slightest bit of give. So the binding there isn't perfect but it doesn't seem fragile or vulnerable. The bindings with regard to the other three covers are quite solid. There is a thin space between the verso of the first blank end paper and front of the second blank end paper in volume 2. I didn't see any other cracks or spaces between any pages in either volume. There is also a loss of paper at the middle of this first blank end paper in volume 2. These volumes may have a little bit of provenance. Each one has the bookplate of a J.W. Murphy MP. When I googled the name I got a short Wikipedia profile for a Joseph Warner Murphy who was a Progressive Conservative party member of the House of Commons of Canada, serving five consecutive terms between 1945 and 1962. He was born in 1892. He also penned his name on the first blank end paper of one volume and the second blank end paper of the other. There's also a penciled name of a Luther Beecher at the top of the title page of both volumes. A search of this name brought up a Luther F. Beecher (1813-1903) who was the author of a famous poem titled "Gone From My Sight," also known as the "Parable of Immortality" and "What Is Dying." Luther F. Beecher was a cousin of Henry Ward Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe. With the exception of these signatures, there is no writing to be found anywhere in either of the two volumes. There is spotting/foxing. I would describe it as light to moderate. Both volumes have frontispieces. The foxing on the frontispieces and title pages is somewhat heavier. The pages are in solid condition. There are only a few tip of the corner creases. There is a crease at the middle of a handful of the last pages of volume 2. There are no markings anywhere in the book. And the bookplates are the only attachments. NOT ex-library.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. This book is in remarkable condition. You can see the covers in the photographs provided. They show no soiling at all and just a very small amount of wear, a little rubbing on the sides of the spine and on the bottom edges. The spine (and its gilt lettering and design) looks terrific (second photo)…. This book is perfectly bound. There are no cracks or spaces and the pages are nicely tight throughout. The page edges are marbled as are the inside covers and end papers. All of these are perfectly clean and unworn. There's very little wrong with the interior of this book. I'll now identify the few minor imperfections: There is light foxing on the tissue guard protecting the first of two different title pages. Neither title page has any foxing. The blank verso of the first title page has two or three small light spots of foxing. The second title page has a speck-sized spot of soiling, and an old signature off the top edge. I can't make out the name, although guesses could be made. On the second end paper, which is white and blank, there are two circular stamps (dime-sized) with blue print inside reading 'Flintshire County Council Record Office'. And on page 85 at the white bottom margin there is another identical stamp.'Flintshire' is Flintshire, East Wales where a previous owner's estate (Penbedw) was situated (read below). How do the text pages look in this book? Fantastic. Not only is there no foxing to be found anywhere, these pages are exceptionally clean (I saw one small spot on the white margin of one page). Moreover, they are somehow bright, 1819 and bright, not the least bit toned. There condition appears to be perfect, that is, there are no creases and no dogeared corners. There's also no extraneous writing in the text, no underlining, no notes, etc. the only writing in the book is the referenced signature. At some point in time this book came into the ownership of a V.D. Buddicom of Penbedw (a 2 by 1 1/2" white label on the front inside cover has printed 'From the Library of Miss V.D. Buddicom, Penbedw'). My crackerjack research has revealed that this was a Venetia Digby Buddicom whose 'father Harry William Buddicom, like his father before him (who worked on the Grand Junction railway and designed the 'Crewe' type engine before moving to France to work on the Paris and Rouen railway, amassing his fortune by buying shares in the fledging railway companies which gained value as the popularity of the railway system increased), was a skilled engineer and inventor. They had designed and built locomotives and railways throughout Europe, South America and elsewhere and were leading figures in the first generation of railway engineers. Her mother, Augusta Henrietta Sophia Digby of Studland Manor in Dorset, was also from a well-to-do family. One of her forbears was Sir Everard Digby, a co-conspirator with Guy Fawkes.' Her brother Walter and his family lived on the Penbedw estate in Nannerch and they were indeed a society family with considerable influence owning much of the land on the Clwydian hills and a 3,000 acre estate in Nantglyn near Denbigh (including the land that lies beneath the Brenig reservoir) as well as properties in France, Ireland and England. The family funded the restoration of the churches in Nannerch and Cilcain and built the village school in Nannerch. Venetia Digby Buddicom, built the village hall in Nannerch as a memorial to her father and to Walter.' Interesting provenance. For prospective international buyers the relatvely lighter weight of this book will allow me to reduce the stated shipping cost down from the $34.00 to $23.00. A price reduction will amend the invoice after the order is placed and before any payment is finalized.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good Plus. Coming up on a couple of centuries old, this book is in excellent condition. A small book (5 5/16ths by 3 1/4), you can see the covers in the photos. The spine and corners are leather. There's rubbing at all four corners and a thin vertical line of rubbing on the front side of the spine and on… the rear side of the spine. There is a little bit of rubbing at the spine ends. Nevertheless, the spine looks really good. The gilt lettering is bright and the bands are in good shape. The cover edges are mostly in very good shape. There is a small spot of rubbing on the rear middle edge. And, as you can see, there is rubbing at and around all four corners. The page edges look good. The top one is a little darker than the other two. You can tell that there was originally a marble design at the middle and bottom page edges, but much of it has been lost. The book is square and the spine is straight. It is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages and nicely tight covers as well. There are no binding issues at all. There are two blank front end papers. The blank side of the frontispiece has some grayish shading over one half. The frontispiece, half-title and title page have mild toning/tanning. But turn to the next page, the Contents page, and it's gone. And it stays gone all the way through to the last page, page 290. I didn't see any foxing in the book. There are two blank rear end papers. All the end papers are in very decent condition. The pages in the book are in excellent condition. They are exceptionally clean. I saw two instances of a small tan spot in the same place on two facing pages. There may be a couple more, a number of scrollings through didn't turn of any. I found two page imperfections, a tiny loss at the top corner of one page, far from the print, and one page that was produced a little longer and wider at the bottom corner which resulted in a crease because the corner was folded in. There is also an old signature off the top edge of the half-title page (there is no other writing to be found anywhere in the book). There are no markings in the book, and no attachments of any kind.
