The results from these self-help groups (SHGs) are promising and have become a focus of intense examination as it is proving to be an effective method of poverty reduction. This paper examines the SHG operating model, the state of SHGs today, their impact on civil society and how they need to be supported going forward. The rise of SHGs and more formal SHG Federations coupled now with SHG Bank Linkage have made this a dominant form of microfinance in addition to microfinance institutions (MFI). In India the short and medium term agricultural credit Co-operative structure consists of three tiers. There are primary credit societies at the village level, central co-operative banks at district level and state co-operative banks (Apex Banks) at the state level. Thus this segment of rural credit forms a pyramid and strength of each part depends on the strength of other associated parts.
