May is a professor emeritus in the Stanford School of Engineering and a senior fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute. He is the former co-director of Stanford University's Center for International Security and Cooperation, having served seven years in that capacity through January 2000. May is a director emeritus of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where he worked from 1952 to 1988, with brief periods away. He held a variety of research positions, serving as director of the Laboratory from 1965 to 1971. May was a technical adviser to the Threshold Test Ban Treaty negotiating team; a member of the U.S. delegation to the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks; and has been a member of the Defense Science Board, the General Advisory Committee to the AEC, the Secretary of Energy Advisory Board, and the Committee on International Security and Arms Control of the National Academy of Sciences. The purpose of the workshop was to consider what bearing the recent and prospective economic growth in less industrialized countries, especially in Asia, might have on decisions by the U.S. government and others on the civilian use of plutonium. The workshop was attended by people with security and energy backgrounds from Stanford, industry, the Electric Power Research Institute, and elsewhere. The goals of the workshop were to examples what the government needed to do to maintain leadership in the energy policy and energy security areas, to help reconcile differences among countries that must in the end cooperate but that presently differ on the question of the future role of civilian plutonium, and to coordinate its own energy and security policies with the varying and changing demands of a developing world.…
