Nine folding topographical maps and one on title page, detailing the route and terrain of the Maine portion of the Appalachian Trail. Although the binding is very tight the cover shows wear… and possible exposure to the elements as there is a light tide mark to the very edges of the text block. (Text and maps unaffected). This guide was published shortly after the completion of the Appalachian Trail in August 1937 and served as an early official guide for hiking the Maine section.

A nice example of an exceedingly scarce early AMC/MATC item.

It is the first publication of this sort by this hiking group and remains virtually unknown, published in May, 1931. First owned by Trail steward Reuben Runkle of Linglestown, PA., his section was in or near the 'Hecher…ts Gap/Susquehanna River area. It is based on several earlier pubs by the PATC, AMC, and the NETC. I believe this to be the first such publication by the fairly newly-formed ATC (Apalachian Trail Conference) which was formed largely by Benton MacKay, Myron Avery, Arthur Comey, and Arthur Perkins. A solid cornerstone publication for this hugely successful hiking organization and Very uncommon especially in this Fine condition. NOTE: We also have a letter/Map from Myron Avery to Mr. Runkle outlining a hike to be made to correct mileage in that section from July 3, 1934. (Original) also available with this booklet.

Another (somewhat) confusing edition in a long line of such guides put out by the ATC and the Maine ATC. This 'Second Edition' was partially reprinted from the original 1935 (different title) & 1942 editions compiled and edited by Myr…on Avery and printed by the Maine Development Commission in 1935 & the MATC in 1942/47. The actual first edition of this title as it is published by the Maine ATC, was published/printed in stalpe-bound stiff card wrappers in 1942 and the revision sheets in 1947. Simply put, this is the first time this title was published in this format bound with stiff card covers and an expandable interior format clipped together with 2 brass clios. The design is to make it easier to separate certain sections and/or maps for viewing and transport, I surmise. The ATC did this with many of their guides during the 1950's through the 1980's. The current book has much added including 2 updated maps. 'The Traveller' is bound-in and in fine condition, 1950. The Katahdin Region is very large and is NOT bound-in, it eas purchased separately. It is entitled "KATAHDIN REGION MAP" issued by the Maine Appalachian Trail Club, Inc., 1951. Fourth Edition (Preliminary (Revised) One-Color) 1951. Deliniator: Kenneth Houck. It will frame quite nicely. App. 200 text pages (comprised of Chapters; 4-12 of the Guide to the Appalachian Trail in Maine.) Pagination; 4 p Supplement, Frontis, I-VI toc, 35-247 (Chapters 5-10), 507-510 (Daicy Pond Section) 7p index. Very Scarce thus.

This, The…Actual First Edition Of This Title As It Is Published By The Maine Atc, Was Published/Printed In Staple-Bound Stiff Card Wrappers In 1942 And The Revision Sheets In 1947. Simply Put, This Is The First Time This Title Was Published In This Format Bound With Stapled Card Covers. I Believe This Was An Editors Copy As There Are Revision Notes In Pencil And Entire Pages Crossed Out, Again In Pencil, And Revision Pages And Sentence Slips Of Paper Glued In. Map # 3 Is Dated 1942, Map # 3A Is An Added Map Dated 1945, Map 3B By Rheta Morrison Is Also Dated 1945. This Is Quite An Interesting Find As It Has Unpublished Revisions Predating The Second Edition Of 1950. The Index Has Been Stspled To The Inside Of The Rear Cover, Rather Than Bound In. Some Silverfishing And Glue Ghosts Are Present.
