In einer Zeit, in welcher der Anarchismus oft idealistische, manchmal fast schon religiös anmutende Charakterzüge annahm, hebt sich Zo d'Axa, der Autor und Akteur dieser Geschichte, als Ketzer der anarchistischen Bewegung hervor, der sich hartnäckig weigert, sich auf den Glauben" an irgendeine abgeschlossene Theorie, an irgendeine rettende Zukunft zu stützen, um seine Revolte nur für die Gegenwart, für das Unmittelbare, für die « stolze Freude des sozialen Kampfes » zu leben.
