The publisher's advertisement notes that the first edition appeared in 1846 and was followed by a second edition the same year due to strong demand before this enlarged edition was produced. Historical Importance Daniel Baker was among the most influential Presbyterian revivalists of antebellum America. His ministry stretched across Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas during the height of the Second Great Awakening. In addition to extensive evangelistic work throughout the South, he became the founding president of Austin College, helping establish Presbyterian higher education in Texas. His revival preaching and missionary labors made him one of the best-known evangelical ministers of his generation. This volume captures the theology and revival preaching that shaped American Protestantism in the decades immediately preceding the Civil War and represents an important example of nineteenth-century American religious publishing. Moderate rubbing and fading to spine. Light wear at spine ends and corners. Binding tight. Text block complete. Moderate foxing throughout, typical for the period. Light age toning. Early owner's inscription to the front free endpaper reading "R. E. Austin, Sept. 18—" (year indistinct). No modern library markings observed.
