Das Brustbild zeigt Scherer im geistlichen bzw. akademischen Ornat mit Ordenskette und Medaillon, wodurch seine Stellung als geehrter Naturforscher und Hochschullehrer hervorgehoben wird. Der dicht punktierte Hintergrund hebt Kopf und Oberkörper plastisch hervor. Johann Baptist Andreas Ritter von Scherer (Prag 24.6.1755 - Wien 10.4.1844) studierte Medizin und Chemie in Prag und Wien und wurde 1782 zum Dr. med. promoviert. Er wirkte zunächst als praktischer Arzt in Wien, später als Professor der Chemie an der Theresianischen Ritterakademie und ab 1803 als Professor für allgemeine und spezielle technische Chemie am Polytechnischen Institut in Prag. Scherer veröffentlichte zahlreiche Schriften zur Chemie, Meteorologie, Physik und Naturgeschichte und war Mitglied mehrerer gelehrter Gesellschaften. 1809 erhielt er das Ritterkreuz des Leopold-Ordens und wurde 1811 in den erblichen Ritterstand erhoben. Scherer gilt als wichtiger Vertreter der angewandten Chemie und Naturforschung im habsburgischen Raum; seine Lehrbücher und Abhandlungen trugen zur Verbreitung chemischer Kenntnisse in Technik und Medizin bei. In der österreichischen Wissenschaftsgeschichte wird er als bedeutender Hochschullehrer und Förderer naturwissenschaftlicher Studien gewürdigt; das Lithographieporträt von Staub wird in Bildsammlungen der Universität Wien und in biographischen Darstellungen regelmäßig reproduziert.
