Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. The idea for this booklet is closely related to the research focus on Balkan archaeology of the OREA Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and its various collaboration partners. Thanks to the financial support of the Innovation Fund of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, it has been pos…sible to realize the Visualizing the Unknown Balkans project over the last two years. The present booklet aims to set out a physical paper-based summary accompanying a digital 3D movie produced within the framework of the Innovation Fund project. The fragmentation of modern-day archaeology on the Balkans, its high impact on the European past and its scientific attractiveness constitute our starting point for turning a new spotlight on Balkan archaeology for a broader audience. Visualizing the complex and multi-level research results of interdisciplinary teams represents one of the challenges in state-of-the-art archaeology these days. In explaining and disseminating the outcome of excavations and fieldwork, we could have realized various initiatives for a scientific and broader public. Open-days for guests and press conferences during the excavations in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in Serbia have attracted lots of media attention since 2018. Our new results have been presented in lectures at the Austrian embassies in Belgrade and Sarajevo as well as in lectures held at several international scientific congresses. Recently excavated objects and finds from Svinjaricka Cuka (Serbia) were presented in an exhibition and its accompanying catalogue at the Schallaburg in Lower Austria in 2020. Implementing this multi-level visualization approach was only possible due to the engaged support of many institutions. We are thankful to all the Serbian authorities, especially the Serbian Ministry of Culture and Heritage and our collaboration partners at the Institute of Archaeology in Belgrade. The Ministry for Education, Science, Culture and Sport of the Zenica-Doboj Canton supported our investigations in Bosnia and Herzegovina. We would also like to thank the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina for providing help during the excavation in Bijeljina. We additionally thank the National Museum in Leskovac, the Museum of Mining and Metallurgy in Bor, the Museum of Semberija in Bijeljina and the Museum of the City of Zenica. We would like to express our sincere thanks to the Austrian Embassy in Belgrade, the ambassador Nikolaus Lutterotti and Sabine Kroissenbrunner as well as to the cultural attache Adrien Feix and the first secretary of the Austrian Embassy in Sarajevo, Nicola Hardwick. The results presented here are based on ongoing research fieldwork in the Balkans, funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF projects no. P32096-G25 and no. P32095-G25). We especially thank the Austrian Academy of Sciences and its Innovation Fund for supporting our initiative. We would like to thank the Austrian Academy of Sciences Press for supporting this publication, Angela Schwab for the layout of the present booklet, Irene Petschko for its organization, Felix Ostmann for the help with images/photos and Nicola Wood for the English editing. Finally, we thank each and every member of our excavation teams and all authors for sharing their expertise with us, namely Snjezana Antic, Michael Brandl, Aleksandar Bulatovic, Clare Burke, Aleksandar Kapuran, Bogdana Milic, Mathias Mehofer, Ognjen D. Mladenovic, Irene M. Petschko and Lukas Waltenberger (in alphabetical order). We hope that the present booklet supports the Visualizing of the Unknown Balkans, revives further interest and informs a broader audience about the continued attractiveness of Balkan archaeology Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. The archaeological site of Svinjaricka Cuka, which is situated on a slightly elevated river terrace in southern Serbia, has been the subject of investigation by an international research team since 2018 as part of an interdisciplinary Austrian-Serbian collaboration. The prehistoric occupation…of the terrace dates back to the early Neolithic period and extends through the Copper and Bronze ages into the Iron Age. The most important scientific data on the Neolithisation process in Serbia and a representative selection of the most significant finds from the first excavation campaigns are presented for the first time in this bilingual (English and Serbian) volume accompanying the permanent exhibition at the National Museum in Leskovac. Evidence of a permanent, solid built architecture of the Neolithic Starcevo culture from around 6000 BCE and the rich find assemblages provide an insight into the material culture of the first sedentary societies practising agriculture in a region that links the cultures of the Mediterranean with those of the Danube region along the major river corridors. The individual chapters not only provide an overview of the excavation results and the material data, but also of the landscape of the Leskovac Basin and the discovery of the site with the help of systematic surveys and geophysical prospection methods. In addition, this book provides insights into the diverse application of multi-disciplinary methods in the evaluation of finds (such as micromorphology, use-wear and residue analyses, and radiocarbon dating) and into the extensive sampling programme of archaeological, geological, anthropological, archaeozoological and archaeobotanical material using state-of-the-art scientific analyses in laboratories. Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. Today archaeometric approaches to pottery are commonly utilised in Aegean Bronze Age archaeology. Pottery experts in the Aegean are now able to use various methods based on a well-established scientific framework and comparable data. This state-of-the-art interdisciplinary approach to Aegean c…eramics produces a large amount of new and complex data, used by specialists and non-specialists for interpretations about socio-cultural phenomena. Therefore, the main aim of this conference volume is to bring together archaeometric experts and their scientific questions and data with traditional archaeological pottery analysis. This enables broader archaeological and cultural contextualisation within one particular geographical area and time horizon - the Early Bronze Age 1-2 periods (3000-2300 BC) on both sides of the Aegean. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. OREA 1 presents the scientific results of the international symposium Western Anatolia before Troy - Proto-Urbanisation in the 4th Millennium BC? The sparse archaeological data published for the 5th and 4th millennia BC and the archaeological picture of western Anatolia, fundamentally changed…in the last decades, needed to bring together specialists of western Turkey and the neighbouring regions to discuss new data in the light of socio-cultural processes in the period before Troy. Furthermore, following the results of the ERC research group (ERC project Prehistoric Anatolia), it appeared high time to focus on this period as it had been frequently neglected in the recent dynamic prehistoric research in western Turkey. The intermediate millennia between the archaeological focus on the Neolithic (and early Chalcolithic) of the 7th and 6th millennia BC with ground-breaking results and publications on the one hand and traditional research on the Early Bronze Age in the 3rd millenium BC with new input from important key sites on the other hand, remained more or less neglected. The symposium aimed to shed light on these developments and focus in particular on the formation of centres of regional and supra-regional importance that emerged in western Anatolia and the broader geographical context of the Balkans, the Marmara Sea, the Greek mainland and Crete. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
