Occasional light creasing, fore-edges lightly bumped. Small ink stamped address on the rear cover page, for mailing, reads: "Library for Social and Technological Altern…atives | Box 472 | Fairfax, CA 94930." Earth First! is a group of radical environmentalists that formed in the American Southwest in the spring of 1980, founded by Dave Foreman, Mike Roselle, Howie Wolke, Bart Koehler, and Ron Kezar, among others. Earth First! quickly came to national attention with their "cracking" of Glen Canyon Dam activist stunt, which was performed and filmed in the spring of 1981. In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Good. Limited Edition. Parchment spine with plain blue paper boards, light edge-wear, 9 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches, top page edges gilt, joints good, tight. [i]-xxii], [2], I-VIII, 1-258 clean pp. Spine with light soil, some toning to the edge of the boards. No. 85 of three hundred copies printed. "The narrative of N…athaniel Fleming, which is here republished by the Naval History Society, forms the earliest known autobiography of a man who served with John Paul Jones as an officer on the Bon Homme Richard, Serapis, Alliance, and Ariel. Having been a prisoner of war in England, he was exchanged, made his way to France, and enlisted on the Bon Homme Richard at Nantes, in March, 1779. He was appointed a midshipman by Jones, and, by his own account, was additionally employed by Jones as secretary or clerk.Upon FAnning's death, his heirs or representatives probably found among his effects the manuscript, and printed it as if for the author, with the title-page of 1806, and with the dedication to his friend John Jackson. Two years later the title-page was replaced by that of 1808, which was pasted upon one of the fly-leaves, the dedication and twenty-four pages expurgated, and the book then offered for sale. The extremely rare copies of either now to be found would show that a very limited number were printed, and few got into circulation." - Editor's Preface.Nathaniel Fanning (1755-1805), b. Stonington, CT; d. Charleston, SC. Fanning was born to the Patriot family, his sea merchant father being one of the largest suppliers of provisions to Washington's army. Nathaniel became an officer in the Continental Navy, was captured at sea and sent to England, and was later released and became an officer with John Paul Jones on the Bonhomme Richard. Fanning continued to serve under Jones as Jones was promoted to different ships, was wounded and again captured, and again exchanged to France, where he was commissioned a lieutenant in the French Navy. After the War he was commissioned a lieutenant in the US Navy and in 1805 while in command of a gunboat in Charleston, SC, he died of yellow fever.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition presented by the inventor of the Bouncing Bomb to his philosopher son in law, Harry Stopes-Roe, son of Marie Stopes. Near fine book in magenta cloth, inscribed by Barnes Wallis at the head of the first flyleaf and evidently read with some care by Stopes-Roe who has made half a page of pencilled notes on the verso o…f the final flyleaf. Also occasional pencilled marginalia, responding for example to Douglas McKie's criticism of the futility of Baconian induction 'but this was general: Johnson p192 et see index "Utility"' and later a pencilled explication of Christopher Wren's Parentalia. Provenance: from the estate of Mary Stopes Roe, Harry Stopes-Roe's wife and Barnes Wallis's second daughter who helped her father in early experiments with marbles, a catapult and a tin bath as he tried to work out how to 'bounce' a bomb across water. Barnes Wallis is best remembered for inventing the bouncing bomb which was used by the Royal Air Force in the 'Dambusters' raid to attack the dams of the Ruhr Valley during World War II. The raid was immortalised in the 1955 film The Dam Busters, in which Wallis was played by Michael Redgrave. Among Wallis's other inventions were his version of the geodetic airframe and the earthquake bomb. His election to the Royal Society in the final months of the war was in recognition of these achievements. His son in law Harry Stopes-Roe (1924-2014) was a humanist and lecturer in Science Studies at Birmingham University, explaining his interest in this history.
