From Introduction: The Margravate of Azilia which Sir Robert Montgomery conceived in 1717 as a colony between the Savannah and Altamaha rivers in what is now the state of Georgia, was only one episode in the long conflict between England and Spain over lands in the southeastern part of North America, but it foreshadowed in several points the settlement founded by General James Oglethorpe in 1733. The two rare booklets reprinted herein from copies in the University of Georgia Library tell about this proposed colony. After the settlement of St. Augustine in 1565, the Spanish had extended missions and presidios, their twin colonial agents, up the coast as far as Port Royal in what is now South Carolina. Long before the settlement of the English at Charles Towne in 1670, the Spanish had withdrawn from this exposed northern frontier. In 1670, the Egnlish and Spanish agreed that actual settlement should determine possession of "The Debatable Land" between English settlements and Spanish St. Augustine. This treaty thus confirmed Spanish ownership of the disputed territory, but by 1700 Spain had abandoned her missions and presidios north of the St. Johns River. She still claimed the area, but so did the Carolina Proprietors to whom it had been granted by Charles II of England in 1665. Actual settlement would determine future ownership.
