Bound in contemporary limp vellum with remains of ties; faded traces of calligraphed title on spine. Early ownership inscription on title, "Es del ll[?] Juan Notarce[?], Costo 7 5"; stamp on verso of the Bibliotheca Capuccinorum Patientiae Christi in Madrid (dispersed 1836). Lower right corner of first few signatures toned from grease or candlewax, strengthened on verso of first two leaves; scattered faint dampstaining to other leaves; closed repaired tear to final leaf (no loss of text). Offered with a recent export license. Rare first edition of this "important milestone in the history of language teaching and vocabulary analysis" (Mathúna, p. 78) by a "pioneer in linguistics": a text physically designed by its Irish authors not simply as a Latin primer, but as a resource for learning any vernacular language on Earth. Rather than taking this cataloger's word for it, we need only read the glowing letter of approbation found here on p. 2 written by the Jesuit missionary to Chile, Luis de Valdivia on the 12th December 1609: "After I read the translation of the Ianua linguarum I became very eager that it be printed before my return to the Indies, where I have been for twenty-one years. And I can emphasize to Your Reverences, as one who has learned with great effort many Indian languages, that the effort Your Reverences have taken [to have the work printed] will save others much effort in learning them. Because through this invention languages will be learned with remarkable ease, and it will bear great fruit in those souls, and great glory to our Lord; and it will be a comfort to the [Jesuit] Fathers of our Religion Therefore I humbly ask Your Reverences, for the love of my Lord, that as soon as possible it be finished and printed, so that it may bear such a treasure, which I will value more than all those in the Indies [and bear] the fruit that will result from this work, in which as many languages as there are [in the Indies] may be learned by this art, there being no other way to learn them, with many lacking faith for this reason". Both the printer's preface and Bathe's own preface also stress that "this [work] will guide especially the Apostolic men in unbelieving regions, who are hard at work establishing the faith, to learn barbarous and foreign languages" (p. 25); and Chapter Nine, "De la impression" is entirely devoted to acknowledging the impetus of yet another missionary, an unnamed "Frenchman of the Company of Jesus, in the Province of Venice", who required the work "for the benefit of the East and West Indies (for which he was about to depart)"; this supplication "greatly moved the author to finish this work and print it, for the love of those who go to the Indies, and to other nations of infidels to propagate and strengthen the Faith" (p. 37). Valdivia was the author of several instructional works in the now-extinct Allentiac and Millcayac languages of Chile; further research might be able to draw a direct connection between the Bathe's new methods and Valdivia's own grammars and vocabularies. Similarly, the identity of the French Jesuit in the Veneto preparing for his ministry in the Indies would be interesting to elucidate. Following a methodological introduction, the text consists of exemplary sentences demonstrating the usage of a carefully-selected set of 5,300 'fundamental' vocabulary words which will enable the learner to gain a strong foothold in whatever language he or she is tackling. Many of these betray a somewhat ethnographic bent; rather than earlier models, which were based on the vocabulary of 'moral maxims', Bathe is proud of the practical applications of his manual and Section Nine, for example, is devoted entirely to terms used in arts and crafts. Other sentences reveal what Bathe supposed might be universal moral tenets, eg.: "Es cosa muy libera.
