Publisher's cloth, pictorial dustjacket. Very fine. Provenance: Gunilla Palmstierna-Weiss (1928-2022). Zwolle, Waanders / Haag, Mauritshuis, 1992. 4to. 28 x 22,5 cms. 112 pp. Richly illustrated in colour. Essays, bibliography and catalogue (28 entries). Text bilingual in Dutch an English. (Foreword:) "The aim of this exhibition, The Mauritshuis in bloom, is to present the most important developments in flower painting in the Netherlands from the beginning of the seventeenth into the eighteenth century. To this end, a selection of almost thirty paintings by the most prominent Dutch and Flemish artists has been assembled. Originating as an independent artistic genre around 1600, the flower still life rapidly achieved great popularity. Initially restricted to a few cities such as Antwerp, Middelburg and Utrecht, in the course of the seventeenth century increasingly more centres arose where the painting of flower bouquets was practised on a qualitatively high level. A remarkable aspect of this development is that masterpieces were painted quite early, as the panels by Jan Brueghel the Elder, Roelant Savery and Ambrosius Bosschaert in this exhibition make clear. While flower still lifes are currently very popular, for a long time they received relatively little attention. Thus, when the Mauritshuis was enriched with the A. A. des Tombe bequest in 1903, interest was primarily directed at the Girl with a turban by Vermeer. Only a very few individuals probably realized that one of the high points of Dutch flower painting, the Vase with Flowers by Ambrosius Bosschaert, was also included in this bequest. At the time, the Mauritshuis' permanent collection could already boast of masterpieces by Willem van Aelst, Abraham van Beyeren and Daniël Seghers. Presently, these bouquets are exhibited amidst the most beautiful Dutch and Flemish flower still lifes in the world; together they form an ensemble of bouquets such as has never before been brought together. Taking place simultaneously with this exhibition is the Floriade. The source of both events lies in the deep and abiding interest in flowers in the Netherlands". …
