Beeckman was a student of the Flemish scientist Simon Stevin. He was a friend of René Descartes, who dedicated his first work, the Compendium Musicae, to Beeckman. Beeckman is considered one of the most prominent scientists of his time. In addition to being a physician and engineer, he studied mathematics and natural phenomena and argued that all science and knowledge must have a solid foundation, taking mathematics as an example. Because he did not publish, his influence on the development of science is poorly known. Through his studies and contacts with prominent natural philosophers, he may have "virtually given birth to modern atomism", a natural philosophy proposing that the physical universe is composed of fundamental indivisible components known as atoms.
