Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. Book Club Edition. Beautifully illustrated by John Allen Maxwell. The Gentleman from Indianapolis: A Treasury of Booth Tarkington, edited by John Beecroft, is a comprehensive anthology that showcases the literary achievements of American novelist Booth Tarkington. Published in 1957, the collection features three of Tarkington's full-length novels Alice Adams, Penrod, and The Magnificent Ambersons as well as seven short stories and excerpts from other works, providing a well-rounded view of his storytelling prowess. Summary of Included Works: Alice Adams: This novel tells the story of a young woman from a modest background who strives to improve her social standing, exploring themes of class and personal ambition. Penrod: A humorous coming-of-age tale that follows the adventures of a young boy in a small Midwestern town, capturing the essence of childhood with wit and nostalgia. The Magnificent Ambersons: A richly detailed narrative that examines the decline of a once-prominent family in a changing American society, reflecting on themes of progress and the passage of time. The anthology also includes seven short stories, such as "The One-Hundred Dollar Bill," "Mary Smith," and "Stella Crozier," among others. Additionally, excerpts from other novels like Little Florence (from Gentle Julia), Love at Seventeen (from Seventeen), and Little Marie from Kansas City (from Little Orvie) are featured, offering readers a glimpse into Tarkington's broader literary works. This treasury serves as an excellent introduction to Booth Tarkington's literary contributions, highlighting his ability to capture the nuances of American life and his skill in character development and storytelling.…
