Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a scathing critique of the state of affairs in the Scottish Highlands during the 19th century, focusing on the intertwined issues of the crofter land question and the Church of Scotland's endowments. The author uses a personal anecdote of a Sunday service in Sutherland to illustrate the deep-seated resentment of the Highland people towards the Established Church, viewing it as a symbol of oppression and injustice. The book explores the historical context of this resentment, tracing it back to the Highland Clearances, a period of forced evictions and land grabs by landlords seeking to replace tenant farmers with sheep. The author argues that the Church of Scotland, through its close association with the landed gentry, further compounded the misery of the crofters by siding with their oppressors. This historical analysis lays bare the profound social and political inequalities that persisted in the Highlands, painting a picture of a people stripped of their land, their livelihoods, and even their religious freedom. The author delves into the question of church endowments, arguing that these funds, which were meant to be for the benefit of the people, were instead used to support the wealthy and powerful, further deepening the divide between the aristocracy and the impoverished crofters. He proposes a redistribution of these funds, advocating for their use in improving the lives of the Highland people through free education, land reform, and the development of the fishing industry. This book offers a powerful and nuanced perspective on the complexities of social and political change, challenging the prevailing power structures of its time and advocating for the rights of the most vulnerable members of society.
