" It is an open secret that during the last three years a fateful struggle has taken place in the Joint Synod of Wisconsin and other states. This struggle has at different periods centered about various objectives, although at bottom the division which has been long in forming, has had one point of departure and has been concerned with one definite set of spiritual values. It is the purpose of this booklet to set forth these differences in their crystallized form, as they appeared in the fall of the year 1926 when pastor W. F. Beitz read a paper entitled "God's Message to Us in Galatians: The Just Shall Live by Faith," to the Wisconsin River- Chippewa Valley Conference in meeting assembled at Schofield, Wisconsin. The forces opposing this paper have found expression in the 'Gutachten' promulgated by the Theological Faculty of the Evangelical Lutheran Seminary of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin at the request of Rev, G. M. Thurrow, President of the West-Wisconsin District of the Wisconsin Synod in midsummer of the Year 1927. Since that time the adherents of the 'Message' have been declared heretics by the above-mentioned church body. We hold that such action is unjust, because we find in Pastor Beitz's paper these truths which the same Faculty that now condemns have represented for almost one quarter of a century. To prove that this is the case is the object of the third section of this booklet "An Analysis of the 'Gutachten' in the light of the Wawatosa Gospel," written by Pastor Paul Hensel. Thus we, the adherents of Pastor Beitz's paper, herewith appeal to any members of the church at large into whose hands this book may fall to form their own judgment in this matter; hence the title of this booklet." Pages 66-127 comprise "Das Gutachten im Lichte Des Wauwatosa Evagellums" in German with occasional comments attributed to Beitz in English in the left margin. Pastor William F. Beitz was a 20th-century Lutheran minister best known for writing the booklet offered here, which was also known as the "Beitz Paper." It triggered a major theological dispute within the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) and the broader Protes'tant (sic) Conference.…
