Sí tengo bien leídos y disfrutados, en buenas traducciones, numerosos haikus en la pauta clásica, que es la que siempre me ha cautivado. Está de más decir que no me considero un "haijin" (así se denomina en japonés al que escribe haikus) rioplatense. Simplemente, el haiku clásico, como forma lítica, se me figuró siempre un desafío. Con sólo 17 sílabas y con una distribución invariable (5-7-5) el haiku es en sí mismo una unidad, un poema mínimo y no obstante completo. De ahí su visión instantánea, su condición de chispazo, a veces su toque de humor o de ironía. Encerrar en 18 sílabas una sensación, una duda, una opinión, un sentimiento, un paisaje y hasta una breve anécdota empezó siendo un juego. Ahora, con el perdón de Bashoo, Buson, Issa y Shiki, ya considero al haiku como un envase propio, aunque mi contenido sea inocultablemente latinoamericano. » M.
