Ruben's story, involving family conflict, institutional commitment, and subsequent evangelistic work, was frequently cited as a notable conversion narrative. Rare first edition of Christian Obligations to the Jews, compiled by Benjamin A. M. Schapiro, founder of the Brooklyn Christian Mission to the Jews, and published by subscription in 1897. The volume contains numerous portraits of Jewish converts and missionary workers and is an important document of Jewish-Christian relations in late nineteenth-century America. The work reflects the activities of the nineteenth-century Protestant missions directed at Jewish communities, a movement that was highly controversial.
