In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. Biro (Jacket design) (illustrator). First UK Edition. First UK edition, published using the American sheets. Please note that this is a clean ex-library copy. ***A very good copy in scarlet cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The boards are generally clean, but have some marks commensurate with age and handling. There is some residue at the tail of the spine from a library label (now removed). No bumps or creases. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Page block edges clean. Internally also very good, with the following library marks: remains of library lending sheet and barcode sticker still attached to front free endpaper; library stamp and a 'Withdrawn' stamp on printer's page; small library stamp to rear, at end of reference notes on page 297 - otherwise clean of library markings. No foxing. Interior pages clean. ***In a very good illustrated dustwrapper, which is not price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 35s net. The dustwrapper is complete, and has NOT been library laminated. The edges of the dustwrapper are creased, nicked and rubbed, especially at the head and tail of the spine. Corners creased, nicked and rubbed with tiny tears. Small closed tear to top edge of front panel. Back panel slightly rubbed and discoloured (being a white background). Pink titles to the spine and front panel bright and unfaded. ***308 pages including appendix; The Brown Decision, Bibliography, Reference notes, and index. 220mm x 144mm. ***'The passage into law of the Civil Rights Bill in July 1964 was a culminating point in the struggle of the American Negro, supported by the majority of his fellow countrymen, to achieve equality of civil rights and status. ---The prelude to the passage of the Bill, a prelude that began on 17th May 1954 with the Supreme Court's decision declaring segregation in the schools unconstitutional, is set forth here in its historical perspective. ---In the ten years that separate these two events die-hard anti-Negro sentiment in the South became solidified, inter-racial relations deteriorated, state-rights and anti Supreme-Court zealots arose, the Ku Klux Klan was revived, and the state was set for violence. It flared in shocking and dramatic fashion in Little Rock in 1957 and 1958; it smouldered in Virginia and reached a crescendo in Mississippi and Louisiana. Opposition to integration was bitter and bloody, but obedience to the law began to make headway. This is the story Mr. Muse, himself a former Virginia Senator, has to tell; a story of which The New York Times Book Review of May 31st 1964 said: "---this book is perhaps the most accurate, comprehensive fully documented work of its kind, undoubtedly one of lasting value. The impact of the decision, from the initial reaction of the Southern whites - surprisingly free of frank hostility - to the civil-rights revolution that developed near the end of the decade, is treated with precision and balance"'. (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***An uncommon and scholarly first edition title on American Civil Rights. A very clean ex-university library copy. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
