De l'histoire de la peinture américaine, nous ne connaissons que peu de choses si ce n'est la période de l'expressionnisme abstrait avec Pollock et le pop art. Or, cet ouvrage démontre combien l'Amérique a toujours eu besoin de représentations. Dès le XVIIIe siècle, les premières peintures vantent la beauté des paysages mais participent aussi d'une idéologie encore en vigueur aujourd'hui : celle d'un pays neuf où tout est possible. Les chapitres, confiés à différents spécialistes, analysent un à un ces moments, ces périodes de l'histoire de l'art américain. Ainsi, les textes consacrés au XIXe siècle sont passionnants puisqu'ils démontrent comment s'est forgé le mythe du grand Ouest sauvage, don de Dieu pour les colons. Les essais consacrés à l'impressionnisme puis aux premières abstractions sont tout aussi instructifs. L'une des réussites de cet ouvrage réside également dans ses longues notices richement illustrées. En effet, pour chacun des artistes, les auteurs ont sélectionné plusieurs uvres contrairement à nombre d'ouvrages d'histoire de l'art ou le lecteur doit se contenter d'une simple petite vignette pour apprécier le travail du peintre. L'ensembles des images consacrées à Giorgia O'Keeffe, Charles Demuth, Charles Sheeler, Edward Hopper, Thomas Benton sont tout à fait convaincantes et permettent, entre autres, de comprendre visuellement la fascination de ces artistes pour les avant-gardes européennes des années 1920. Malheureusement, la fin de l'ouvrage passe sous silence la richesse de la peinture américaine des cinquante dernières années. Les années 70, 80 et 90 sont réduites à de courtes mentions. Des figures aussi importantes que Cy Twombly ou des courants comme l'art minimal sont totalement absents. C'est d'autant plus regrettable que c'est précisément durant cette période que l'art américain a produit ses plus grands maîtres. --Damien Sausset Ce livre, qui rassemble deux cents ans d'histoire de la peinture américaine, avec quatre cents tableaux mémorables et près de quatre-vingts artistes, met au jour un ensemble jusqu'à présent peu exploré par le goût européen, qui a eu tendance - en vertu de ses propres antagonismes - à en opposer les différents développements. Aussi est-ce un véritable continent de l'art qui nous est révélé à travers ce voyage esthétique qui nous mène de l'Indépendance jusqu'à ces dernières années.
