Ratner's poems were worked out in concert with these woodblock illustrations, each influencing the other. "The results [are[ a work of visual literature which exists apart from the poems, and which we hope will make its own statement - Introduction by Ratner." Julian's life-journey invlves an encountter with a stag. The stag is invoked in relief on the top cover, and in intaglio on the rear, and covered fully in split-grain leather. wood engravings (illustrator).
