La diversité des analyses qu'il a su jusqu'à présent provoquer, et dont ce livre restitue la quasi-totalité (entretiens avec l'artiste, textes écrits par lui-même, conférences qu'il a prononcées, exégèses d'historiens de l'art et de critiques, que celles-ci prennent la forme de préfaces de catalogues ou d'essais plus développés, au total près de quarante contributions composant la fortune critique, ici disponible pour la première fois, de Piffaretti), témoigne à elle seule de son impact sur les mémoires. C'est que, entre banalité de la trace et plate virtuosité de sa duplication, entre trivialité du non-sujet et héroïsme sans phrase de sa reprise, Piffaretti s'est donné les moyens d'inventer l'acte de peindre et, avec lui, le tableau, ce que chacune des contributions composant ce volume met singulièrement en valeur. On aura donc compris qu'il s'agit ici, loin de tous les discours et de toutes les pratiques engoncés dans la mort de cet art lesquels s'apparient fréquemment à l'insistance du regret, bien souvent le premier masque du ressentiment , de répéter sans cesse la peinture, de la reprendre et de la relancer, c'est-à-dire de la refaire, chaque fois, pour la première fois.
