Bermfeld was an author rabbi, historian, publicist and biblical researcher. From 1886 to1894 he was the chief rabbi of the Sephardic community in Belgrade, Serbia, and for the last decades of his life he was an independent scholar in Berlin. At age 13 he translated a novel from Hebrew to German. At 18 he first published an article in HaMagid. At 21 he became the assistant to Hamagid's editor, David Gordon. He completed his studies in the universities of Konigsberg and Berlin. Both he and his wife died in Berlin in 1940. Their son died in the Mauthausen concentration camp, Austria.
