One of the main means of overcoming the dangers hidden in linguistic fragmentation is unquestionably plurilingualism and, relatedly, translation. Translation enables the transmission of content from one linguistic-cultural system to another. Multilingualism is not just a peculiarity of the contemporary age; it is a fundamental phenomenon of the Middle Ages. The conceptual relationship between linguistic fragmentation and cultural inclusion, and the inter-relationships of these two apparently opposing poles with the communicative tool of translation, requires some reflection within the broader framework of translation studies in the Middle Ages. This collection of essays examines the seemingly paradoxical concept of linguistic fragmentation as an instrument of cultural inclusion thanks to the practice of translation. The essays explain the relationship through translations between many medieval languages and texts, from Icelandic to Italian, from English to French, and more. They examine vernacular circulation of religious texts (translation of the Bible, of hagiographic or homiletic texts, etc.); circulation, thanks to translation, of literary texts (e.g., the translation of epic-chivalric cycles); translation from a koine language to another language and vice versa; and the relationship between the choice of the target language and the socio-cultural context. Explores the relationship between linguistic fragmentation and cultural inclusion during the Middle Ages, with translation, multilingualism, and plurilingualism analysed as a medium for contact rather than separation. Redatto intorno alla metà del XIII secolo, il Ferguut è l'unico rifacimento del Fergus antico francese, composto da Guillaume Le Clerc circa cinquant'anni prima. Tanto a livello strutturale quanto a livello tematico la vicenda mostra il suo debito nei confronti di capolavori cavallereschi come, tra gli altri, il Perceval, l'Erec et Enide o l'Yvain di Chrétien de Troyes. Proprio l'iniziatore del genere del romanzo arturiano è al centro della critica del Fergus, che si configura come una vera e propria parodia, in cui temi e motivi tradizionali vengono continuamente sovvertiti. Il Ferguut, al contrario, non mira a dileggiare Chrétien. Pur presentando le stesse sequenze narrative e raccontando una storia molto simile al suo ipotesto francese, il romanzo nederlandese si rapporta a esso in due modi ben distinti: fino al v. 2592 è una traduzione semplificata, ma piuttosto fedele; nei versi seguenti, fino alla fine, diventa invece un adattamento più libero, caratterizzato da sfumature diverse, come il mutato atteggiamento nei confronti dell'universo femminile, valutato qui più positivamente, o l'umanizzazione dell'eroe. Questi e altri interventi possono essere letti come un tentativo di uniformazione allo stesso canone arturiano che Guillaume Le Clerc aveva deciso di canzonare. Il Ferguut, dunque, lungi dall'essere una banale semplificazione, si distacca dal Fergus in quello che è il suo intento primario, dimostrando la sua autonomia e distinguendosi come uno dei romanzi meglio.
