During the last few decades nutrient concentrations in the Dutch coastal waters have increased significantly. Values observed for rates of primary production as well as for concentrations of chlorophyll and for particulate organic matter have been higher during recent years than estimates from earlier periods. Thus more food will have been available for herbivorous benthos during recent years. Both biomass and annual production of the macrozoobenthos living on the tidal flats in the western part of the Wadden Sea doubled during the 1970 to 1984 period. More than half of the species contributed to this increase. In the species studied in most detail, Macoma balthica, both reproductive success and growth rate increased significantly during the 15-year period. Though a causal relationship between simultaneous increases of nutrient levels, primary production and secondary production cannot be proved, such a relationship seems to be natural. So far, obvious detrimental effects such as mass mortalities from lack of oxygen appear to be rare in the well-mixed Wadden Sea. 10 pp., 4 figs, gr. 8.

In the course of 1990, stocks of mussels (Mytilus edulis) declined to unprecedentedly low levels in the Dutch Wadden Sea. Hardly a wild mussel bed was left on the tidal flats as a consequence of three years (1988, 1989, and 1990) with failing recruitment and intensive fishing for seed mussels. During these three years, recruitment of cockles (Cerastoderma edule) also failed, whereas fishing was continued. Bird species taking these bivalves as staple food, the oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus) and the eider (Somateria mollissima), experienced food shortage. Significant numbers of eiders left the Dutch Wadden Sea area or died, whereas oystercatchers remained abundant trhoughout the winter in most of the Dutch Wadden Sea. Alternative prey species of oystercatchers experienced unsually high mortality rates in the appropriate size classes. This was so in all other common species of bivalves, viz. first-year and older cockles, adult Macoma balthica, and juvenile Mya arenaria. This led to minimal stocks of food for oystercatchers in the late winter of 1991. In March 1991, cockles were depleted and the combined stocks Mya and Macoma would soon have run out of food supply to the overwintering oystercatcher population. Apparently, oystercatchers are able to reduce the stocks of their various bivalve prey species to very low levels. 12 pp., 7 figs, gr. 8.

Production of shell lime by the edible cockle C. (Cardium) edule living on the tidal flats of the Dutch Wadden Sea was assessed from estimates gathered twice annually from 1968-1982 on abundance, age composition and growth rates at 15 sampling places on Balgzand, a 50 km2 tidal flat area. Large-scale surveys showed Balgzand to be a representative for the 1300 km2 tidal flats of the Dutch Wadden Sea. Calcimass of the shells of the standing stock of living cockles increased from approx. 50 to approx. 200 g/m2. The long-term average amounted to 104 g/m2. Mean annual values for production and elimination were estimated at 118 and 114 g/m2*yr, respectively. Turn-over rates thus amounted to approx. 1.1 a-1. As a consequence of the high between-years variability of the rates of both recruitment and mortality, all population parameters varied strongly from year to year. Mean annual carbonate production by cockles on the tidal flats of the Wadden Sea is estimated at 234,000 m3 but this estimate is far from precise (95% confidence limits being about 100-400,000 m3). About 3/4 of this quantity will become available for shell fishery. The present level of exploitation of the stock of cockle shells slightly exceeds the lower limit of the long-term production estimate. 16 pp., 9 figs, gr. 8.
