Ebd., geringf. stockfleckig. - Franz Bruno Hofmann (1869 - 1926) war nach Abschluß seines Studiums an der Univ. Prag 1894 Assistent Ewald Herings, folgte diesem 1896 an die Univ. Leipzig und habilitierte sich dort 1898 für Physiologie. 1902 wurde er a.o. Prof. an der Univ. Innsbruck, 1905 o. Prof. und wechselte in gleicher Position 1911 an die Univ. Prag, 1913 nach Königsberg, 1916 nach Marburg, 1922 nach Bonn und im folgenden Jahr nach Berlin. 1909 wurde er in die Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina aufgenommen. Er erforschte die Physiologie des Herzens, der Nerven und der Muskeln sowie die allgemeine Physiologie der menschlichen Sinne (u.a. Die Lehre vom Raumsinn des Auges, 2 Tle., 1920-25); daneben arbeitete er auf den Gebieten Histologie und physikalische Chemie. Alfred Bielschowsky (1871 - 1940) studierte in Breslau, Heidelberg, Berlin und Leipzig (Dr.med. 1893) und wurde anschließend Assistenzarzt in Leipzig, wo er sich vorwiegend auf den Gebieten der Ophthalmologie und der Physiologie weiterbildete. 1900 habilitierte er sich dort für Augenheilkunde, wurde 1906 a.o., 1912 o. Prof. in Marburg; 1918 folgte seine Ernennung zum Medizinalrat. Er war seit 1923 Ordinarius der Ophthalmologie an der Univ. Breslau, sah sich 1934 zur Emigration in die USA gezwungen und wurde 1937 Prof. der Augenheilkunde und Direktor des Dartmouth Eye Institute in Hanover, New Hampshire. Er war Mitarbeiter des Handbuchs der gesamten Augenheilkunde von Alfred Karl Graefe und Edwin Theodor Saemisch sowie Mitherausgeber des "Archivs für Ophthalmologie" (1926-36), als praktizierender Mediziner erwarb er sich vor allem um die Kriegsblinden des Ersten Weltkriegs große Verdienste.
