Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Trade PB. 4to. Gana Art, New York. 2006. 75 pgs. Illustrated. Wrappers lightly worn with some light shelf-wear to the extremities present. Book is free of ownership marks. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. In Bien-U Bae's exhibition at Gana Art New York, two of his most important motifs are represented. One is the Sonamu ("pine trees") and the other is Or um ("small mountain"). Both sets of photographs are highlights of Bien-U Bae's long career, and are representative of a truly meditative state of awareness that reveals the vast intricacy of our planet. Most of these photographs are done in tones of black and white. Their stark representation exudes a silent abstraction that functions in contrast to the hypermediated color of urban signs and commercial desire through which we forget the more sublime sensory pleasures of nature. In these photographs, Bien-U Bae returns us to a primal state of awareness. His photographs are more than images. They are icons of nature that teach us how to see and comprehend the sensuality of nature and how to instill pleasure within our cognitive sense of being. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.…

Hardcover. Zustand: New. With his meditative landscape photographs, which have an almost calligraphic quality, Seoul-based Bae Bien-U is one of Korea's best known artists, and has influenced a generation of photographers during his many years of teaching. He first rose to prominence in his country with his series--ongoing for the past two decades--depicting pine groves, which are plentiful, as the pine is Korea's national tree, representing longevity. Beginning with a selection of images taken near Gyeongju's Silla Dynasty burial mounds, this stunning large-format volume assembles images from the entire series, which were shot exclusively in natural light, both day and night. Natural effects like fog and filtered sunlight add to the expressionistic quality of the images, which recall Western Romanticism but reflect a characteristically Korean visual vocabulary. This volume is published concurrently with an exhibition at London's Phillips de Pury & Company.…

Hardback. Zustand: Very good. 27 x 31cm 140pp very good hardback with transparent jacket, a slight curl along lower edge. Includes a text: The Silent Melody in the Wind followed by black and white reproductions showing the Korean photographer's meditative landscape photographs possessing an almost calligraphic quality. His new series, created over the past 20 years, depicts landscapes in motion. Trees and grasses bend in the wind; steep cliffs and water-sculpted rocks lie shrouded in spray and mist amidst the ocean surf; horizon lines vanish into the white-grey of the sky. The term for "landscape" used in Korea as well as in China and Japan is composed of the words for "wind" and "scenery." It is closely linked to traditional cosmological concepts regarding a quintessence an ether that permeates all living things. The poetic coinage "Windscape" is a literal translation of this term, which carries the same layers of meaning throughout East Asia. Signed and dedicated to Alistair Hicks on the front free end paper.…
