As students read, they will also be learning to think and to wirte in the ways common to the academy. The carefully written discussion questions wil help them learn to read analytically, questioning as well as comprehending the texts. Writing assignments sequenced to elicit informal responses, information gathering, more formal essays, and essay revisions will assist students to develop a productive writing process that will serve them as they move on into their own disciplinary work. Working with this book will hellp students to develop the skills to pose questions for themmselves, to beginn to generate answers, to see connections and contradictions, and to communicate their knowledge to others.
