He is also Fellow of the IEEE and IET and has been awarded a DSc (Eng) from the University of London. He was born in Hampshire in 1930 and educated at Brockenhurst County High School and HMS Conway. After ten years as a deck officer in the Merchant Navy he joined AERE Harwell in 1957. Subsequently he obtained a degree in Physics and worked as a research scientist at Rutherford Laboratory, Oxfordshire. He was co-founder and chairman of Vector Fields Ltd in 1984 and the first President of Vector Fields Inc. in 1988. In 1992 he was elected to the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences as a foreign member and also received the IEE innovation medal. In the 1993 New Year Honours he was appointed by HM Queen Elizabeth II an Officer of the British Empire (OBE) for services to science. In 1995 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the Technical University of Graz, Austria.…

He served for nearly ten years as a navigating officer but gradually developed a strong interest in mathematics and science. Eventually, by private study, he was able to come ashore and follow a scientific career. Joining the Atomic Energy Research Laboratory at Harwell in 1957 he became a member of a team involved in building particle accelerators for nuclear structure physics. He was awarded an OBE in 1993 for services to science and exports. This book is an account of his life in a small town in the 1930's, his early education, subsequent sea career and first attempts to study mathematics and physics. He has completed a second volume which covers his scientific and business career.…
