Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. New hardcover in a new dust jacket. Pages are clean and free of marks or underlining. 8vo. (6 x 1.1 x 9 inches) Includes photo plates. 304 pp. Fast shipping in a secure book box mailer with tracking. A narrative of chance and purpose that touches all corners of society to tell the improbable tale of one man looking for something greater. A young, Black kid from one of the poorest sections of Washington, D.C., despite being legally blind in one eye, develops into a Hall of Famer. A rookie bank teller rises to become a business leader. A once-reluctant political neophyte answers the call to become mayor of Detroit and establishes a mentoring program for Black teens that serves as a model for the nation. All of these stories belong to one man: Dave Bing. In Attacking the Rim, Bing shares this multifaceted personal saga with a rare combination of modesty, moxie, and self-belief. Reflecting on his playing days with the Pistons, Bullets, and Celtics, Bing takes readers inside the exciting world of pro basketball at the moment when sensational athletes were turning a low-budget game into a high-powered, multimillion-dollar entertainment spectacle. From inside the Detroit mayor's office, he offers a firsthand look at the city's monumental challenges, including debt, corruption, unemployment, infrastructure, and the daily choices between the lesser of evils. And finally, he takes us through the?mentoring foundation he's created, cutting through the red tape of charitable work to achieve fundamental change in the young men of Detroit. Dave Bing's story is one of unbelievable perseverance and success, and in it he shares the lessons for personal growth and excellence he's learned along the way.

DJ. Pages are clean and tight. Illustrated with color photographs. Bing was a legendary player on the Detroit Pistons NBA basketball team. 'After starring at Syracuse University, Bing played 12 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a point guard for the Detroit Pistons (19661975) , Washington Bullets (19751977) and Boston Celtics (197778). During his career, he averaged over 20 points and six assists per game and made seven NBA All-Star Game appearances, winning the game's Most Valuable Player award in 1976. The Pistons celebrated his career accomplishments with the retirement of his #21 jersey. In addition, he was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and named to the NBA 50th Anniversary All-Time Team and the NBA 75th Anniversary All-Time Team. Bing founded Bing Steel, a processing company that earned him the National Minority Small Business Person of the Year award in 1984. Soon the business grew into the multimillion-dollar Detroit-based conglomerate, the Bing Group, one of the largest steel companies in Michigan. Bing entered Detroit politics as a Democrat in 2008, announcing his intention to run for mayor in the city's non-partisan primary to finish the term of Kwame Kilpatrick, who had resigned amid a corruption scandal. After winning the primary, Bing then defeated Interim Mayor Kenneth Cockrel Jr. And was sworn in as mayor in May 2009. Later that year, Bing was re-elected to a full term. However, he lost most of his power to Detroit's emergency manager Kevyn Orr, had numerous health problems and suffered approval ratings as low as 14%. Bing thus did not seek re-election in 2013 and was succeeded by politician and businessman Mike Duggan.' Bing has been respected for his integrity and commitments to the city of Detroit and its residents.

Rare Nike NBA warm-up jacket signed by some of the most influential players of basketball. Size medium, signed in black felt tip on the front by NBA legends including Larry Bird, Julius Erving, Jerry West, Dolph Schayes, Dave Bing, Bill Walton, Kevin McHale, Robert Parrish, Rick Barry, and others. In near fine condition. A remarkable piece of NBA history to add to any collection. The history of the National Basketball Association (NBA) is marked by numerous key moments and figures, with Larry Bird emerging as one of the most influential players in its development. Founded in 1946 as the Basketball Association of America (BAA), the league merged with the National Basketball League (NBL) in 1949 to form the NBA. Throughout its evolution, the NBA grew in popularity, becoming a global phenomenon by the 1980s. Larry Bird, who played for the Boston Celtics from 1979 to 1992, was central to this growth, helping to elevate the league with his rivalry against Magic Johnson and his exceptional skills. Bird's fierce competitiveness, versatility, and leadership on the court, coupled with his three NBA championships and three consecutive MVP awards, solidified his place as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport. His influence, alongside that of other stars like Michael Jordan, played a crucial role in the NBA's rise to prominence.
