Born in Richmond, Virginia, Henry Binga Dismond (1891-1956) was a pioneering Harlem physician, medical device inventor, student of Haitian culture, and poet. While attending Rush Medical College, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving with the 370th Infantry during World War I. Near the war's end, he was cited for courageous leadership under heavy gunfire and promotion to First Lieutenant. This collection of verse draws on his military service and the political awakening of the Harlem Renaissance. Illustrations by E. Simms Campbell (1906-71), the first African American cartoonist published in nationally distributed magazines. Octavo. Original blue cloth binding, with gilt-stamped titling. The author was a Richmond-born, World War I veteran who for a time held the world record for the quarter mile, became a doctor and was the Director of the Department of Physical Therapy at Harlem Hospital.
