Cloth, folio, 37 cm, 224 pp, 100 colour maps. Introduction by John Goss; foreword by Peter Clark. From the blurb: "Joan Blaeu's The Atlas Major, first published in 1662, is still the largest atlas ever produced. Over six hundred maps portray the world as it was known in the middle of the 17th century with its great empires, far-off exotic kingdoms and lands of legend. The embellishment and decoration of these maps, unsurpassed in their beauty and sumptuous detail, bring to life a long-lost age of mapmaking. The Atlas Major was the most expensive book sold in the 17th century. Published in an original edition of about three hundred copies, the atlas was not only functional, but it was also the great showpiece of the Amsterdam mapmaker's art. Copies were presented to kings and emperors (the French edition was dedicated to Louis XIV, The Sun King, and his finance minister, Colbert) and were bought by wealthy noblemen and merchants to display at home and impress their rivals." No Binding. Zustand: Very Good. Reproduction. A reproduction of a map by Johan Blaeu, drawn originally for his Atlas Novus of 1654, reprinted in 1662; there is no date on this reproduction but it is c1970, on good quality paper. It was printed by John Bartholomew & Son of Edinburgh and published jointly with the Royal Scottish Geographical Society, in colour which is faithful to the contemporary colouring. The map shows the Firth of Clyde as far as Glasgow, in detail as far west as Gourock with an indication of the port of Largs, as far sough as the Loch of Kilbirnie. This map is too large to mount, so will be posted rolled in a tube. Blaeu (illustrator).…

Joan Blaeu's atlas, the finest ever published The finest and most comprehensive baroque atlas was Joan Blaeu's exceptional Atlas Maior, completed in 1665. The original 11-volume Latin edition, containing 536 maps, put Blaeu ahead of his staunch competitor, mapmaker Johannes Janssonius, whose rivalry inspired Blaeu to produce a grandiose edition of the largest and most complete atlas to date. Covering Arctica, Europe, Africa, Asia, and America, Blaeu's Atlas Maior was a remarkable achievement and remains to this day one of history's finest examples of mapmaking. This reprint is made from the National Library of Vienna's complete, colored, gold-heightened copy, thus assuring the best possible detail and quality. The book's introduction, by the University of Utrecht's Peter van der Krogt, discusses the historical and cultural context and significance of the atlas; Krogt also provides detailed descriptions of the maps, allowing modern readers to fully appreciate Blaeu's masterwork.…
