Meyer Anfang 1897 einen Vortrag angekündigt: Ein neuer Dichterkreis". Eine Freundin, bei der ich für diesen Abend eingeladen war, bat mich, nicht in den Vortrag zu gehen. Aber eine Ahnung sagte mir, ich dürfe den Vortrag nicht versäumen. Ich ging also hin, und das war schicksalhaft. Der sehr interessante Vortrag war über George und seinen Kreis. Ich hörte wie die meisten Anwesenden an diesem Abend zum erstenmal den Namen Stefan George. Bald darauf lernte ich zufällig den damals zwanzigjährigen Ernst Hardt kennen, den Meyer in seinem Vortrag als einen der jüngsten Dichter des Kreises erwähnt hatte. Wir freundeten uns an, und Hardt verbrachte einen sehr plaudersamen Abend bei mir (ohne andere Gäste) und ich bald darauf ebenso bei ihm. Er war, soviel ich weiß, früher Kadett gewesen und wirkte auf mich noch immer wie ein Kadett. Ich hatte ihn sehr gern, wenn er mir auch etwas kokett vorkam; namentlich kokettierte er mit seiner Jugend. So erzählte er mir von seinen dichterischen Plänen und sagte: Wenn ich erst erwachsen bin, will ich." Dabei war damals schon ein Schauspiel von ihm (wohl Die tote Zeit") aufgeführt oder stand unmittelbar vor der Aufführung. Ich bat ihn, mir die Dichtungen Georges zu leihen, die damals nur als Privatdrucke in sehr kleiner Auflage hergestellt waren (die Hymnen" nur in 100 Exemplaren). Ich war hingerissen von der Schönheit dieser Dichtungen und hatte den Wunsch, sie zu veröffentlichen. Ich bat Hardt um Georges Adresse. Hardt sagte mir, Georges Adresse sei vollständig unbekannt; hingegen könne er mir die Adresse von Carl August Klein geben, der der nächste Vertraute Georges sei. Ich schrieb Klein in diesem Sinne und bekam sehr rasch die Antwort, George sei snr Zeit brieflich nicht erreichbar, aber er (Klein) stehe meiner Anregung sehr freundlich gegenüber und werde sie bei nächster Gelegenheit an George weitergeben.
