This catalogue is published on the occasion of the exhibition "Writings in Painting", organized by the Centre Artistiques de Rencontres Internationales at Villa Arson, Nice. "The theme of 'writing in painting' naturally emerged as the starting point, one of the most sensitive areas of artistic inquiry since the last war. The exhibition was conceived as a conference, modeled on certain meetings between scientists, aimed certainly at enjoyment, but even more so at reflection. Eleven leading researchers, art critics, and theorists in their fields were asked to propose a list of works they wished to see included, thus illustrating their perspective on the subject. It is interesting to note that almost all refrained from suggesting some of the names that immediately came to mind, believing them to be so illustrious that others would surely have included them. Thus, with their agreement, a few essential reference points were added, resulting in a total of 117 participants, involving the collaboration of some 52 museums or galleries, each group balancing and highlighting the others."
