A member of the legendary Bauhaus, Andor Weininger (1899-1986), produced a fascinating body of work, attaining his greatest success with the Mechanical Stage-Review, a kind of moving abstract painting. Fleeing the National Socialists, Weininger emigrated to Canada where he produced an eclectic body of w…ork, ranging from landscape sketches to calligraphic abstract works. Yet his correspondence with Bauhaus figures such as Walter Gropius and Xanti Schawinsky revealed a frustration with the conservative cultural scene. Produced upon the occasion of a major gift from New York's Weininger Foundation to several Canadian institutions, this publication takes a close look at Weininger in Canada, situating his career within the context of the emergent Canadian abstract art scene. Weininger's work can be found in the collections of the MoMA, Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Busch-Reisinger Museum at Harvard University.
