Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 54 pages with diagrams and index. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6 1/4") bound in original blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and front cover with gilt insignia on cover. With an additional section of Ilyin-Genevsky's best games. Translated by Bernard Caferty. Edited by Dale Brandreth. (Caissa limited editions volume 5) [Lusis: 1280] First edition into English. Alexander Fyodorovich Ilyin (Russian: Алекса́ндр Фёдорович Ильи́н-Жен
77;́вский; November 28, 1894 September 3, 1941), known with the party name Zhenevsky, "the Genevan" because he joined the Bolshevik group of Russian émigrés while exiled in that city, was a Soviet chess master and organizer, one of founders of the Soviet chess school, an Old-Guard Bolshevik cadre, a writer, a military organizer, a historian and a diplomat. He was born in Saint Petersburg and was the younger brother of Red Navy leader Fedor Raskolnikov. Ilyin-Zhenevsky promoted the usage of chess as an instrument for developing tactical and strategical comprehension during military training and he was the main responsible for the spreading of chess as a way to teach the basics of scientific and rational thought. The first Soviet Championship in 1920 and the 1933 match Mikhail Botvinnik Salo Flohr were organized by him. He was three times chess champion of Leningrad (now again Saint Petersburg) in 1925 (jointly), 1926, and 1929. In 1925, he won one game against José Raúl Capablanca, making him one of a handful of players to have an even score (+1 =0 −1) against Capablanca. A variation of the Dutch Defence, characterized by the moves 1.d4 f5 2.c4 Nf6 3.g3 e6 4.Bg2 Be7 5.Nf3 0-0 6.0-0 d6 7.Nc3 Qe8, is named after him. Being personally associated with many oppositionists since Civil War times, he suffered persecution in the Joseph Stalin era. According to Botvinnik and official sources he died in a Nazi air raid on Lake Ladoga on a ship during the siege of Leningrad, but it is believed by some that he fell victim to the Great Purge along with the majority of the Old Guard of revolutionists. Condition: A near fine copy without jacket as issued.

Buch Erstausgabe
Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. [iii]+9 typescript pink pages on recto only with table. Quarto (11" x 8 3/4") bound in original pink wrappers with lettering to spine in spiral binding. (Lusis: 1459) First edition. Mexico City 1932 was another Alexander Alekhine victory hard on the heels of those at Pasadena 1932, Berne 1932 and London 1932. After his superb achievements in the two super-strong tournament of San Remo 1930 and Bled 1931 it had become difficult to expect anything other than a momentous victory ahead of a strong field by a wide margin. Mexico City was organized very quickly when Mexican chess fans relized their opportunity to see Alekhine in action after several impressive displays. The organizers were also able to find Issac Kashdan in Texas and there by increase the sporting nature of the event by having one of the then "hottest" young players in the world. With this as a background we see that the Mexico City 1932 tournament, with an average strength easily lower than any Alekhine had competed in for some years. It began on the evening of October 6th at the Press Social Center and lasted util October 17th. In addition to Alekhine and Kashdan, Jose Joaquin Araiza Munoz (the Mexican Champion), Jose Asiain, Francisco Javier Vazquez, Enrique Gonzalez Rojo, Joaquin Medina Zavalia, Filberto Acevedo, Manuel Soto Larrea and Juan Brunner rounded out the field. The highlight of the tournament was naturally the contest between Alekhine and Kashdan which concluded in a 45 move draw. The two contestant won all their other games and shared first with 8.5. The Mexican champion captured third two and half points behind. In fourth was Asianin with 5.5 points. Vazquez captured fifth a point behind. Sixth and seventh were shared by Gonzalez and Medina with 3.5 points. Acevedo held sole eighth at 2 and ninth and tenth were shared with Soto-Larrea and Brunner with 1.5 each. Condition: Corner bumped else a very good to fine copy.

The Lodz Chess Society organized this tournament and according to Grekov it took place immediately after the Chigorin - Salwe match (+7 -5 =3 in Chigorin's favor, March to April). The Tournament consisted of three cycles after which everyone had played every other one time so one cycle equals three rounds. After three cycles all the players had faced each other three times. Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. 1st Edition. xxxvii+167+[4 ad] pages with diagrams, tables, illustrations and bibliography. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6") issued in original red cloth with gilt lettering to spine and front cover. Errata laid in. First American edition. The AVRO Chess Tournament of 1938, sponsored by the Dutch broadcasting company, Algemeene Vereeniging Radio Omroep, was a valiant effort to provide a challenger to Alexander Alekhine. The official opening of the A.V.R.O tournament took place on Saturday evening, November 5th at the Amstel Hotel in Amsterdam. No games were played until the next day, with the evening devoted to opening ceremonies, speeches and drawing lots for the schedule of rounds. The hall was decorated with the national flags of the participating masters' countries. All players were present except for Capablanca, who was represented by tournament director Salo Landau. Mr G de Clercq, president of A.V.R.O, opened the ceremonies with a speech of welcome and stated that his company was very proud to have brought together such a brilliant array of masters. Dr Euwe, on behalf of the players, thanked him, praised the organization of the tournament, and hoped that the quality of the play would prove that all the players were worthy of the honor of participating in the tournament. The Dr Alekhine spoke. He stated that all sorts of rumors were being circulated to the effect that the winner of this tournament would have preference over all others in arranging a match with him for the world championship. These rumors presumable originated because of his contract with the A.V.R.O, in which he agreed to play the winner under conditions to be formulated later. He stated that he retained, however, the right to first play for the world title with others and that the A.V.R.O contract clause had not created new rights and preferences. He placed himself on record as believing that a tournament, no matter how strong the players, cannot be a preponderant factor in deciding the question of the world championship. After the speeches the drawing of lots took place. Each player was addressed in his own language by a young girl garbed in the appropriate national costume of his country and was given a bouquet of flowers.(AVRO 1938). Condition: A fine copy issued without jacket.
