Einband gering berieben. - Living between memory and opacity, Brenner's art balances a characteristically odd simultaneity of narrative and a vague, dissolving, referentiality. At once apparent as well as obscure, this work exhibits a poetic integrity and an emotional resonance which… eludes explanation. On the surface, the graphic outline of this work is deceptively clear, at times even bordering on the emblematic. However, visual associations cannot be symbolically authenticated, but roam in an entangled and ephemeral cloud of cultural memory. A sphinx-like dissonant simulation anticipates the viewer's participation in a collective symbology as it seduces the media-literate and sophisticated gaze. Brenner uses form, color, line and texture as styles and types to simultaneously call back layers of our cultural history while mounting an interpretative obscurity. Brenner's image repertoire of mock bamboo and pop patterns, as well as simulated wood, artificial snow and vinyl slit drapes, loosely and tangentially touch blurry, half-remembered moments of a '50's, '60's and contemporary image culture. For instance, "Strangers on a Train" an installation of two cot beds covered with a rough coat of grass green artificial snow, lends an evocative comment on the Modernist suburban ideal and the related Utopia of leisure time.
