Cuttle's hook is erroneously on his left arm; p.xv, no page entry for the frontispiece and vignette, and no quotation marks around "the Party" line 2; p.14, ten lines up, "aint" has no apostrophe; p.26, line 11 has "fidgetty"; on p.40, l.16-17 "shewed" and "shew" instead of "showed" and "show"; p.284, fifth and sixth lines from the bottom, "Delight" instead of "Joy"; p.324, p.582, the last line has no full stop. Other points are noted in the later state. Ex-libris James Hale Bates (North American travel writer, 1826-1906); engraved bookplate to pastedown executed by Edwin Davis French (1851-1906) in 1894. Examples of French's work are held at Yale, Harvard, the British Museum, New York Public Library, Rochester University and Illinois State Library. Contemporary half navy calf over marbled paper-covered sides, red morocco title label, edges speckled red, salmon-coloured drab endpapers. Contents clean throughout, plates are particularly fresh with only light marginal spotting, binding lightly rubbed with a few small cracks to head and tail at joints. A very good copy indeed. One of Dickens most accessible tales, set at the time of the French Revolution; the fortunes of two men - Charles Darnay, an exiled French aristocrat and Sydney Carton, a disreputable but brilliant English lawyer - become entwined through their love for Lucie Manette. Drawn together to the streets of Paris, their fate is played out under the vengeful shadow of La Guillotine.

Light spotting to text, some browning to plates (heavier in places), otherwise crisp and clean internally. Light general wear to binding. Very good. Charles Dickens' highly autobiographical novel, whose story is told almost entirely from the point of view of the first person narrator, David Copperfield himself; the first Dickens novel to do so.
