Bruce Held has spent the many years in Washington, D.C., filling a number of… key roles at the U.S. Department of Energy, including director of intelligence and counterintelligence and a stint â" for most of a year â" as acting head of the National Nuclear Security Administration. During that time, government duty separated him from his wife, Lani, except for his occasional weekend trips to their home in New Mexico. Held's first career was as a clandestine operations officer with the CIA, and he previously authored, "A Spy's Guide to the Kennedy Assassination," as well as "A Spy's Guide to Santa Fe and Albuquerque." When thinking of New Mexico, few Americans think spy-vs.-spy intrigue, but in fact, to many international intelligence operatives, the state's name is nearly synonymous with espionage, and Santa Fe is a sacred site.
