II. 74 Brus". - "Diane Arbus' irritierende Fotografien von Freaks und Exzentrikern waren in der internationalen Kunstszene bereits bekannt, als sie sich 1971 das Leben nahm. Ein Jahr nach ihrem Tod wurden auf der Biennale in Venedig zehn ins Monumentale vergrößerte Aufnahmen ihrer wunderlichen Menschen gezeigt (Zwerge, Transvestiten, Nudisten), die zur `überwältigenden Sensation des amerikanischen Pavillons'; wurden. [.] Es ist durchaus möglich, dass Diane Arbus keinen solchen Bekanntheitsgrad erreicht hätte, wäre sie am Leben geblieben, obwohl allgemein anerkannt wird, dass ihr herber, fast brutaler Stil [.] großen Einfluss auf andere Fotografen ausübte. Sie änderte drastisch unser Empfinden dafür, was in der Fotografie erlaubt ist: Sie erweiterte das Spektrum von Themen, die akzeptabel sind. II. 74 Brus". - Diane Arbus' irritating photographs of freaks and eccentrics were already well known on the international art scene when she took her own life in 1971. One year after her death, ten monumentally enlarged photographs of her strange people (dwarves, transvestites, nudists) were shown at the Venice Biennale and became the 'overwhelming sensation of the American pavilion'. [.] It is quite possible that Diane Arbus would not have achieved such notoriety had she lived, although it is generally recognized that her harsh, almost brutal style [.] had a great influence on other photographers. She drastically changed our perception of what is acceptable in photography: she broadened the range of subjects that are acceptable.
